The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn As A Typical Nobody Review – The Demon King Wants To Make Friends

The demon King after being reborn as Ard.

Reading the title “The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody” gives us a big hint of what the basic plot of this anime is going to be. Shijou Saikyou no Daimaou Murabito A ni Tensei suru is an anime that is going to take place at a magical academy, and the main character is our reincarnated Demon Lord. Magic is the centre point of this anime, and so is the concept of friendship. Sounds interesting? Let’s discuss this a bit more!

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn Episode 1 has Varavatos as the greatest demon lord in all of history who reigned for several millennia as absolute ruler. He is too powerful to form any sort of friendship with anyone else. His strength brought only solitude, so the Demon began longing for an ordinary life. When he realizes his need and desire to have close friends, he reincarnates as a villager in a nondescript village into an ordinary family as the only son, Ard. The show starts with Ard being a 10-year old boy trying his absolute best to forge bonds of friendship with children of his age group and drastically failing to do so.

Ard trying to make friends.

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Episode 1 rides on all the character designs to basic plot to have ever been used in this trope of anime centred around demon kings in the human world, including Ireena as our female childhood friend, Ireena seems to have her own demons to deal with (ironic, isn’t it?). Ard seems like a powerful and mature character, re-born with one goal in his mind- to make friends, but waits till the age of 10 to start doing so. What could be the reason? A foreshadowing of him meeting important people from his past life? Or an indication of his friends and goals finally appearing before him.

This anime has the potential to do good if the characters and their magical powers are utilized properly. However, the recycled and common tropes might hurt its chances of success. Ard’s efforts to make friends show how desperately he lacked any connections of similar nature in his previous life. Viewers root for him on the sidelines but would surely like to see his character growth and confident personality emerge. Other secondary characters did not get much screen-time but seemed captivating. The premise of the magical school, accompanied by the display of powers we see in this episode, is riveting, and we cannot wait to find out if the king in the magical academy will be successful!

The animation and art style are not especially bad, but it is not good either. It is your generic, modern anime style. The male protagonist has the almighty majestic figure (and a Fanclub that worships him) and a white-haired female character who honestly does not stand out at all. The whole general vibe of the anime is sort of gloomy except for the parts where magic is being used. This gives us a hopeful future for The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody, as our main characters are soon planning to go to a magical academy.
