Amazon has decided to develop a standalone series with the original character Lisbeth Salander, which is based out of the trilogy by Steig Larsson. Co-produced by Amazon and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures TV, the series is being made with the title The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. However, it will not be an adaptation of the trilogy and will instead have a new setting, new storyline and new characters.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will have a very different approach towards the character Lisbeth Salander by bringing out original stories which the readers of the literary franchise will be able to connect to.
Steig Larsson’s Millennium book trilogy includes, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest. The book trilogy has sold over 100 million copies and is extremely popular across the globe. The series hasn’t finalised on the artist who would be playing the character of Lisbeth Salander.
Before the adaptation of the series by Amazon, the three films based on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo novels had featured Noomi Rapace, Rooney Mara and Claire Foy as Lisbeth Salander. So far, there hasn’t been any word on when Amazon is planning to launch the series.
Owing to the pandemic, the current situation of the OTT remains competitive, streaming platforms are always looking out for exclusive content that they can release. Amazon’s competitors such as Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ are rolling out original content almost every week now.
Amazon too has released big-name shows such as Jack Ryan and has the Lord of the Rings series coming up. In the case of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, it could be a potentially doubtful situation in terms of the series garnering popularity on the streaming service.
The recognition that the Hollywood remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo hoped for did not come their way. David Fincher’s 2011 Hollywood adaptation of the film only made $100 million within the country and globally made about $232 million. Although it was well-received and appreciated by fans, it couldn’t make the necessary breakthrough to be a financially successful literary franchise starter.
In 2018, Sony again launched another sequel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which had a budget of a $43 million but ended up making just $35 million globally. It goes to show how the franchise has not done well at the box office repeatedly.
In the case of releasing The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series, there is a chance that it could become a popular show as there is no dearth of shows with a dark and gritty story-line. These have also been perceived well by viewers. Another reason could also be that the show will be a standalone one, with little references to the books. An opportunity like this could prove to be beneficial for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
