The Girl from Plainville: Episodes- 1 & 2

The first episode titled ‘Star-crossed Lovers and Things Like That’ opens with the segment of Michelle Carter and Conrad texting each other, constantly. The texts range from romantic lines to a final call on some decision that ends with ‘are you gonna do it now?’. We are then taken to Mattapoisett, MA on July 13, 2014. and we are informed through a conversation that a certain Conrad Roy III has been missing. Soon a search leads us to Conrad Roy, who is the same person we were introduced to at the beginning of the episode- now dead due to committing suicide by poisoning himself with carbon monoxide fumes in his truck. The news is soon broken to the family.

In the local police station, Officer Gordon takes a particular interest in this suicide case and asks his subordinate officers to work promptly on the case by obtaining the passcode to get into Conrad’s phone. Meanwhile, a broken Lynn Roy (Conrad’s mother) is unable to find her son’s writing possessions when she receives a call from a certain Michelle Carter. Soon after Michelle reveals to her parents that Conrad is dead to which her parents reply, “Who’s Conrad?”, affirming that their relationship was not very public. Michelle then goes on a hysteric breakdown in front of her friends but soon enough recovers to pick out the funeral outfit.

Meanwhile, at the Roy household, Lynn is taken about by Michelle’s constant support through texts and, even wonders how close the two were that Conrad actually left her a note that he loved her. At the Carter household, Michelle forces her parents to let her go to Conrad’s funeral. At the funeral, Michelle and Lynn exchange a few words which reflect how Michelle had some kind of supremacy and power over Conrad. But later when the ashes are scattered, Michelle is kept out of the family matter. An upset Michelle approaches her friends to host a fundraiser for mental health awareness, unknown to Conrad’s parents.

On the other hand, officer Gordon finds video recordings of Conrad talking about his degrading mental health and, folders of papers documenting Conrad and Michelle’s private chats. As for Michelle, the episode ends with her mother asking her to visit ‘the doctor’ again hinting at her degrading mental health, which she dismisses and, rather sings away a song in front of the mirror, both crying and laughing.

In the second episode of The Girl from Plainville titled ‘Turtle’ we meet Conrad Roy for the first time back in 2012, alive and running about doing his own thing. We understand the kind of stature his family holds but, sure does not fit in. It is a stage in Conrad’s life when he is recovering from being ghosted by the girl he likes- Lily when he meets Michelle through the game of Tennis. In the present time i.e., 2014, we see Gordon take the text filled folders to his superior and, chalk out how irrespective of how Conrad’s mental state was, it was Michelle’s assistant that could have led to the suicide.

As for the audience to find out if Michelle is actually that manipulative enough or not, we are witness to Michelle’s first day back to school and, even though her friends try to maintain distance from her, she ends up manipulating them against their wish to spend time with through by using Conrad’s death as a tool. Michelle goes ahead with a baseball tournament to host the fundraiser, which she deliberately plans in Plainville. On being questioned, she tries to convince the plan as a gateway chance for Conrad’s family.

The Girl from Plainville (Ep 1-2): Final Thoughts

The Girl from Plainville has a subtle way of pinching the audiences awake by giving them a real-life incident of influence and manipulation. The first two episodes of the show are laid out in a fashion that almost feels like a documentary as you are confused but engaged and want to know what happens next. Elle Fanning is brilliant and bittersweet in her role as Michelle and, you can hardly understand the psychology behind her reactions and behaviour. It will be interesting to see
