The Eternaut Review
If you remember the trauma of watching The Mist, then The Eternaut will feel a bit familiar. Ash falling down from the sky, people dying, and something is in the air that is killing them. Of course, the aliens are coming later in this Argentinian series and the toxic ash is supposed to be only the start of a huge destructive plot, so I guess we can all agree that this is less traumatic than watching a man kill everyone inside a car and then stepping outside to commit suicide only for help to roll down beside him.
Trauma aside, Netflix’s The Eternaut is a gorgeous series full of anticipation of what’s next. It’s a slow series focusing more on the human spirit and society’s breakdown in the face of threat, so sci-fi fans in need of action might find themselves a bit annoyed at times. It’s mostly character-driven, with us following these people coming together to save themselves from an unknown and unseen threat.

The series picks up steam a few episodes later, as we are introduced to more than just poisonous ash. The series builds its tension well, albeit slowly, and leaves us hungry for more. The characters hook us to the story, making us look forward to what happens to them and whether or not they get out safely. While everyone’s motivations at this time are different, it becomes clear quickly that they will need to band together to get out of this one. It’s interesting to watch their relationships evolve. It’s like being a fly on the wall, watching situations unfold with all of their complications.
I think the series takes a bit too much time to give us a twist, and keep the series moving in general. Its slow pace might be its undoing, but its interesting premise gets the job done. I think it’s the fact that The Eternaut brings to us every little thing about Juan’s adventures that bogs the runtime down. The series picks up after episode 4, but we see too much bickering for our minds to strictly be stuck to the thrill of watching space bugs crawl on the Earth. I also think that the series features some very annoying people whose questionable decision-making makes you want to scream into a pillow.

Either way, the series’s depiction of a broken Earth attacked by unknown creatures is absolutely riveting. Buenos Aires, dilapidated and covered in ash raining from the sky continuously, is absolutely beautiful, and adds to the anticipation of something bigger being around the corner. The fact that the series introduces the fiction after thrilling us with the science of their horrifying situation makes everything not only believable but also twice the more impactful.
Of course, the performances are key in The Eternaut. Considering how much we follow the characters in every little thing, everyone does a brilliant job of delivering a believable and relatable performance. Ricardo Darín, Carla Peterson, César Troncoso and Andrea Pietra are absolutely fantastic and are memorable in every frame. However, the best of this series, personally, is probably the church scene — totally worth the patience in the first three episodes! Although we somewhat go back to square one after that, which will frustrate viewers.

There’s a scene in episode 4 that is just so heart-thumping that it’s difficult not to watch in abject horror as a fool-proof plan breaks down in front of our eyes. The series balances the storytelling with some really good background scores, and sometimes the lack thereof is all it takes to deliver something memorable.
Final Thoughts
The Eternaut is entertaining in parts and requires patience. When the action rolls around, it leaves us on edge. However, any time after that takes a dramatic nosedive, full of uninteresting conversations. It’s not a bad show, just could’ve been better.

Zzzzzz.zzzzzz hups *wakes up* oh dear lord of jesus I’m still alive…
Wher was i…oh right… its true the first 2-3 episodes you could almost easily skipp,
Its only dead people, in the second episode, the train people, why are they don’t dead???
All the doors are open and others has died just open the window,
And that guy couldn’t tell them to cover up with others clothes cover the mouth osv,
A train has alot if food if the just move to other wagon,
The start oooh netflix are going for the kill AGAIN, i wish they could be the some of the main people,
Now I’m stuck with ooolld people only and they are not the brightes the workd has seen,
Hope we actually gets too see those ALIENS, or this is over real quik, and the whole world dead?? Woow this is a cheap show just a handful of survivers,
Now please something happen or il will DIE OF BOREDOM…..*falls back too sleep* ZZZZZzzzz…zzzzz….
Soooo the enemies here is not aliens, mystical creatures, or monster’s,
Its only human with weapon that shoot people,
So far mostly dead people on the street, but nothing else happening that make me stay awake….
Its really slow, im at episode 3 at the end….hope the rest of it manages too keep me awake….
Episode 3, that women crushes that asian boy glasses, in the next scene their back on, and in the next their off and gone,
The next second a PREGREES women shows up, GREAT JUST WHAT THIS EXCITING SHOW NEEDS, it was good so far,
Well that was its, its over I’M OFF THIS ONE.
Bugs in episode 4, okies but hundreds of bugs in the street marsh like it was lord of the rings thing, and lords of rings music,
Thats all the aliens, i think a less number bugs had been better, and maybe different ones too, these looked weird like spider weird,
And only 6 episodes its not enough to show and explain what happening with the rest of the world,
Those military in the first place was useless and missed more than the troopers from star wars,
Or just make a sesson 2. Someone out there have the answer, some area 51 place.
IM AT EPISODE 5, THE BUGS IS NOT THE TREATH HERE, HUMANS IS,
THE GROUP FUND A BIG PEACFUL NALL TOO SETTLE DOWN,
AND THE SNOW DISSAPPEARED,
ALL LOOKS GREAT, UNTIL A FEW GUYS GETS THERE AND STARTS KILLING PEOPLE,
IF THIS IS GONNA BE THEN FUCK THIS SHOW, THATS WAS OVER THE LINE,
ONE SHOOTER HAD BEEN OK BUT THREE FUCK THAT,
GIVE ME THE NAMES OF THOSE THREE, I JUST WANT TOO TALK…..
YES SPOILERS BUT ITS NESSAREEY TO LETT YOU KNOW IT, MY SELF THINKING OF ENDING MY NETFLIX ACCOUNT FOR GOOD, CAN’T WATCH STUFF LIKE THAT ANYMORE…
Uhhh episode 5, could that old guy stop daydreaming for once some jerk is firering over their head,
Hidding in a garbage container, that reminds me of that big concert in that dessert, the theoristes flew in parachutes,
Good memories from netflix good jobb (sarcasme),
This also reminds people off terrorisme around the world, shcool shooting, soo thank you netflix, there is not enough of that in the world ( again sarcasme), and wars in the world.
Next sesson i prefer watch the bugs or new bugs killing people, in a bug way.
Mystical stuff is happening and we need more sessons to explain some of them.
For now im off this show, i will pray for your lost soul (the makers).
I think the season is a bit unfinished because, from what I am seeing, the real stuff should be in the second season!
