The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6 Review: This Could Have Been So Easy

You would think that we are about to reach the conclusion of this arc, but you would be wrong. The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6 was an interesting episode to wade through for various reasons. Let’s find out why in this review!

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6 Overview

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6 TItle

The Case Study of Vanitas, or Vanitas no Carte in original Japanese, is a supernatural, historical, and vampire show based upon a manga written by Jun Mochizuki. It follows the human-vampire duo of Vanitas and Noe as they try to find out the perpetrator behind the recent impurity in the vampires’ hearts. This episode is also called Vanitas no Carte Season 2 Episode 6, The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2 Episode 6, and Vanitas no Carte Part 2 Episode 6.

This season of Vanitas is being brought to the medium of anime by Studio Bones, a giant behind classic anime shows such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and My Hero Academia. The season is being directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, who also directed part 1 of the show, alongside several shows of the Monogatari series. The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6 Review- Complicated Would Be An Understatement

Vanitas Jeanne The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6

This is a particularly hard show to talk about. I should know as all I ever do is talk about shows such as this. While one could write PHD level dissertations about singular episodes of shows like Attack on Titan and Sonny Boy, talking about Vanitas beyond a simple “it was great” and “it was awful” is a daunting task. It has been hard to understand why since plenty is going on in the show to talk about. However, that might be the issue we are dealing with. There is just too much to talk about in Vanitas. So much so that the important plot points get mixed in with the unnecessary ones to generate useless garble.

The latest arc, and by extension the entire season, is the perfect example of what’s wrong with this show. In layman’s terms, The Case Study of Vanitas is too ambitious for its own good. It tries to employ several writing, direction, and animation techniques to appear more dignified and deep than it is, and each of those attempts ends up hurting its narrative or characters somehow. The show tends to follow the “one steps forward, two steps back” approach to everything.

Astolfo Noe The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6

This review originally began with summarising the whole story of Season 2 so far, before it was quickly realised that it was already 500 words deep, and the summary was only about halfway done. That’s how convoluted this is. There are tiny nuances to every character and every relationship, which sounds like a good thing until it is implemented in the manner this series is. It isn’t cohesive, and characters perform actions that don’t make sense until a long time later because of this season’s biggest crime- non-linear storytelling.

Unfortunately, that has become a staple of wannabe deep and nuanced writing these days, and it is hard to find shows that don’t feature it in some way. However, there is a right and a wrong way to do things, and this isn’t the right way. There are so many storylines that seem like they repeat each other just because they happen right after each other, even if they didn’t need to be. Chloe, Noe, Astolfo, and Vanitas (although his past is somewhat shrouded in mystery) all appear to have the exact same beats in their stories, and it has become tiring.

The most disappointing aspect of everything is that The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6 was great. It was entertaining and easier to follow than the previous episodes, in addition to bringing the best elements of the convoluted mess that came before it to present a great story. However, it seems like a wasted effort since all this makes you think about is how good this arc could have been and how complicated the journey to this moment was. This episode was good, but not good enough to make up for everything wrong with this season so far.

Verdict

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 6 was the best episode of a highly disappointing and convoluted season so far. One can hope that this might be a good omen for things to come, but the track record so far would tell one otherwise.
