The Case Study of Vanitas, or Vanitas no Carte in original Japanese, is a supernatural, historical, and vampire show based upon a manga written by Jun Mochizuki. It follows the human-vampire duo of Vanitas and Noe as they try to find out the perpetrator behind the recent impurity in the vampires’ hearts. The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 10 Review- The Past
Misha brought with him an almost dead body of Dominique in the previous episode, but due to Noe’s unique powers, he also brought along a window to his enigmatic past. A past that he also shares with Vanitas, someone who has been guarding his secrets with his life so far in the series. That ensured that whenever any parts of his story were revealed, it would generate significant interest. We learned about his past with the mad scientist under the Chausser’s noses in the first season, but it is now time to go deeper into his psyche.
There’s no better way to put this experience other than terrifying. We saw how young Misha was when he was brought into the laboratory in the previous episode, and we heard the horrors inflicted upon him by his own mother. Hence, it didn’t take long for him and Vanitas to form a deep connection of their own, both going through some horrible atrocities that the show thankfully didn’t insist on showing. There was a reason Vanitas was trying to hide this from everyone, and it’s because he doesn’t want anyone to look at him as someone worth pitying.
The mythos of the Red and Blue blooded vampires that we first learned at the start of the show was also explored, and it’s good that it was since it felt like a bot of an abandoned plot point since it was barely referenced in this season and only really made a splash in season 1 (or part 1, whichever you prefer). Vanitas and Misha, alongside a fascinating new character, are phenomenal in this episode, and their interactions are very fun. While Vanitas and Misha aren’t given any time to explore their relationship, what’s shown works fine as a primer in the duo’s pseudo-sibling relationship.
The episode adds some levity to the dire situation the duo is in, and it is extremely hit and miss. While the show’s sense of humour works in a stress-free situation, a case like the Doctor’s, who was written as a somewhat comedic character despite his numerous disgusting crimes, does not fit particularly well with this show’s comedy. In a way, that adds to his insanity and effectiveness as he doesn’t come across as malicious but has a one-track mind towards getting scientific results, no matter how much it hurts anyone that isn’t you. He is never surpassing Bondrewd, but he’s a good enough villain.
While we still don’t know everything about Vanitas’ past, we know enough to make an educated guess about the kind of character he is and what his motivations are (not really because the show spells it all out in this episode). His and Misha’s confrontation will be one for the ages, and the show has never been more exciting as it is in The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 10. This was a great episode that accomplished most things anyone would want from a show like this.
The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 10 was a great outing that explored some mysteries buried deep beneath, and it still isn’t done yet. There’s a lot more to do and not a lot of time left!
