Here’s When Indians Can Watch Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story In Theatres

Acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of the romantic musical West Side Story is set to release in Indian theatres on December 10. The screenplay is by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tony Kushner.

As this is a musical, the choreography is by Justin Peck and composition by David Newman. In fact, Composer Newman arranged and adapted the original score for the film by Bernstein.

What is West Side Story going to be about?

The 2021 version of the film is going to tell the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. It is loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

The film is going to star Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Josh Andres Rivera, Ana Isabelle, Corey Stoll, Brian d’Arcy James and Rita Moreno.

West Side Story will cover two characters Tony and María, who despite having affiliations with rival street gangs eventually fall in love in the 50s New York City. Given the screenplay comes from the Angels in America writer, we can only expect metaphors and poetries being subtly laced within important socio-political conversations.

As for the filming, locations were covered in Harlem and other locations in Manhattan and Flatlands in Brooklyn.

When can we expect West Side Story to release?

The release date of the film has faced quite some delay due to the pandemic. The initial release date was back in December 2020 but it was not possible to give the movie a theatrical release then. However, for the time being, we have the date set right.

From 20th Century Studios, Disney India will release on December 10.
