Sonyliv’s Vaazhl Review: Crazy Editing but the Story Is Lost

Vaazhl, a Tamil-language drama film released on SonLIV, and as the name suggests, it is a story about life. The movie explores an unconventional life where you give your family, job, and house, and just live. Vaazhl stars Pradeep Anthony as Prakash, a man who is tired of his life. He has a girlfriend who pesters him, a family that is too intrusive and full of drama, and a job that he hates. Due to this reason, he falls into a mid-life crisis. 

On one fine day, he finds himself in a situation for which is completely unprepared. His childhood friend Yaatrama, played by TJ Bhanu, comes to his doorstep seeking help, she is with her young kid Yaatra. The three of them go on a long road trip in order to run away from their demons. They travel through the beautiful landscapes of India, from beaches to mountains and plains.

Scenic Journey of Self-Discovery

The editing of Vaazhl is commendable. Raymond Derrick Crasta, the editor of the film deserves appreciation. There are so many cuts in the film that sometimes you can’t keep track of when the shots change. On top of that, we get to see scenic routes in India and abroad. Vaazhl was shot in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. The cinematography and the use of light and colours are spectacular. 

Vaazhl Prakash

After a major misadventure, Prakash and Yaatra, who have left behind everything, meet a Bolivian girl named Tanya. The three of them then go on another spectacular journey through more scenic routes. At one point, they also attend a party from where a more psychedelic self-discovery journey starts. The visuals and the music are great, and so is the energetic editing. 

It is applaudable to make a film of discovering oneself in a wanderer way. Arun Prabu, director of the film did a wonderful job at not trivializing the journey of self-discovery which is often done in a lot of other films. Regardless, it still shows the wanderer way of life is just about walking through lush green mountains or an ocean full of corals.

An Unconventional Movie

All the shown philosophical musing in Vaazhl are great at the end but they are too much in number. Due to this, the story is lost. At one point, you can find yourself asking what is happening. The story becomes too disconnected which also loses the interest of the viewers. Anything is happening and there is too much convenience shown in the journey of Prakash and Yatra. It was a bold move on behalf of Arun Prabu to create a film with a screenplay that has no structure. No matter what, the result did not come out as expected. 

Vaazhl self-discovery of Prakash

Often the size of the shots change. It is unusual to see that in an Indian film. Vaazhl is made unconventionally while it depicts an unconventional life. Even the scenes are written in such a way that it feels like you are flipping through photos in an album which was the intent of Crasta. As Vaazhl comes to an end, Prakash’s life transforms completely. 

He has met with many eccentric characters who helped in shaping him. From them, we learned and experienced several things such as the idea of tomorrow. Tanya tells him that think of tomorrow when it comes which changes him gravely. Nevertheless, the meaning behind the characters got lost too with the exciting editing. The continuity between two thoughts in Vaazhl couldn’t keep up with that. Vaazhl is a one-time watch film that you will appreciate for its intent but will get confused due to the detachment it creates.
