Rulers of Fortune Review
In Rulers of Fortune, a bunch of people get desperate to control a gambling ring while the government looks on, and people murder others with impunity and without a care in the world. The series is for anyone who loves a melodrama and those who are okay with watching a bunch of things happening without rhyme or reason, and everyone looking at each other with serious, squinty eyes.
I enjoy watching shows like these because they are so over-the-top that they are entertaining, in a weird way. Most of it doesn’t make any sense, but you don’t feel anything about that because things just go from one extreme to the other over and over again. The storyline is simple enough and focuses on how power and money change even the most well-meaning people.

It’s a very obvious and repetitive story that we have seen in these series multiple times. And that’s fine, in a way, because you marvel at the audacity. Profeta’s rise ushers in his fall, and viewers will find it interesting in more ways than one. The series also highlights how the women are sidelined at every turn, even though they are the ones who do most of the planning and plotting.
This is a very common theme in these kinds of shows, and although it might reflect reality, I think I am tired of watching these repetitive themes over and over again. Regardless, I enjoyed watching Profeta change and his idea of family taking shape thanks to Leila’s influence. The series showcases every nuanced complexity very vividly, so you might not be given much of a chance to contemplate, but there are some twists and turns which are exciting to watch.

André Lamoglia and Mel Maia are great in the show and have great chemistry. I enjoyed watching them interact and their icy relationship turn into something more than that. In the end, everyone else is fine as well, including Larissa Bocchino, but their characters are nothing to write home about. It’s just that you have probably seen these people in some other show, one way or another. None of their characters have remotely anything new going for them, except maybe Leila, who seems to have a personality and a motivation that separates her from the rest. I found everyone else to be quite flat and unimpressive.
Final Thoughts

Rulers of Fortune is an enjoyable watch if you like twisted, melodramatic shows. Although it’s nothing quite innovative, I guess it’s fine for a one-time watch, but that’s about it.
