Queen of Tears Plot

Hong Hae-in is a chaebol heiress, known as the ‘queen’ of Queens Group Department Stores while Baek Hyun-woo, her husband, is the legal director of the conglomerate and known as the ‘supermarket prince’. Hong Hae-in is described as a cold and calculated woman while Baek Hyun-woo is warm-hearted and emotional.

A marriage between an influential woman and an entry-level employee is dubbed the ‘wedding of the century’ and is nothing but a facade. Belonging to two different worlds, the couple could not overcome their differences but a big crisis brings these two together. Soon, they realise that maybe being different from one another is not so bad after all.

Kwak Dong-yeon as Hong Soo-cheol

Queen of Tears Best Side Characters

Hong Soo-cheol is Hae-in’s younger brother and from the beginning, he seems like a brat – an adult who never really became one because he has been shielded by his mother. He believes that he is the rightful owner of Queens despite not being able to prove his worth either to his father or his grandfather, the Chairman.

However, he is extremely protective of his wife Da-hye and his son Geon-u. Even when Da-hye ran away after conning him, he made sure that they were safe. Being in Yeongdu-ri allowed him to see things in a different light – it made him more responsible. We love the character for his innocence as well as the love he has for his wife and child.

Kim Jung-nan as Hong Beom-ja

Queen of Tears Best Side Characters

Hae-in’s aunt and the youngest of the Chairman’s children – Beom-ja is a firecracker. She wears her emotions on her sleeve and does not hesitate to tell anyone how she feels – especially if she dislikes someone. In the beginning, one could mistake her for a rich heartbroken woman with anger issues.

While the second half might be correct, she is also a soft-hearted woman who loves her family. Even after her father raised his hand on her, she wanted to make sure he was doing alright. She worked hard to get him justice because of how much she loved him. Her sweet personality and protectiveness are endearing to watch!

Moon Tae-yu as Kim Yang-gi

Queen of Tears Best Side Characters

Kim Yang-gi is Hyun-woo’s trusted friend and the person outside of his family who cares about him. In the earlier episodes, it seems like he cares about Hyun-woo but does not go out of his way to help him. However, when Hyun-woo falls into trouble, he runs to help him out in every way possible.

In the last episode, one can see how Hyun-woo’s injuries affected Yang-gi. He kept telling him to go back to the hospital but a few sweet words from Hyun-woo and he reluctantly aided him to get Hae-in back from Eun-sung. He is an example of a true friend.

Hwang Young-hee as Jeong Bong-ae

Queen of Tears Best Side Characters

Hyun-woo’s mother is one of the most comforting characters on the show. Unlike most mothers-in-law in K-dramas, she ensures her daughters-in-law are comfortable around her. She advised Hyun-tae’s wife to treat her like a mother-in-law and not a mother so she doesn’t have to visit her all the time – giving her the freedom to continue the relationship however she wants.

With Hae-in, she treated her like a mother should. Hae-in’s mother had her issues with Hae-in but Bong-ae always called her ‘sweetie’ or ‘baby’ and ensured she was comfortable in every way possible. Hae-in also gave back that love by listening to everything she said. We loved their scenes a lot!

Yoon Bo-mi as Secretary Na

Queen of Tears Best Side Characters

A woman with clear-cut rules in her workplace, Secretary Na is also a trusted aide to Hae-in. Similar to Hae-in when it comes to their personalities, she also cares for Hae-in deeply and does everything for her. The time when she found out about Hae-in’s condition, she rushed to her side and awkwardly but sweetly hugged her.

They might never admit that they are friends but their funny conversations as well as how they support each other through everything are enough for the viewers to know what they mean to each other.

Jung Jin-young as Hong Beom-jun

Queen of Tears Best Side Characters

A man who scared Hyun-woo in the beginning turned out to be a man with many insecurities. Hae-in’s father seemed like the typical rich man – snobby, rude and clear-cut about his decisions but situations changed his perspective and the viewers got to see the true side of Hong Beom-jun.

After getting to know about his daughter’s condition and losing Queens Group, he became the man who stood up for his family in every way. He felt sad for not being able to provide but he gave something better to his children – his support and that was enough for them.

Lee Joo-bin as Da-hye

Queen of Tears Best Side Characters

Da-hye is Soo-cheol’s wife who seemed too good to be true in the beginning. As expected, it was revealed she was in cohorts with Eun-sung, Grace Goh and Sol-hee. She felt the same as they did but spending time with Soo-cheol and seeing how he cared about her made her feel differently.

After coming back to him, she did everything in her power to protect Soo-cheol, Geon-u and his family – even if it meant to turn herself in. Even when Soo-cheol vehemently disagreed with her, she made him understand how it was her duty as the person who wronged them. She was the embodiment of the person who never forgot the value of the second chance given to her by Soo-cheol.

Kim Joo-ryoung as Grace Goh

Queen of Tears Best Side Characters

Grace Goh was the perfect representation of a grey character. She definitely committed or assisted in a few crimes however her guilty conscience caught up to her. Grace Goh is a person who ran behind one thing only – money. All her actions were motivated by that and she never saw anything wrong in them.

However, when the consequences became bigger than she could handle, she decided to help the right people in her way like ensuring the book reaches Hae-in and swapping Eun-sung’s tablet. But she also spent time in prison to make up for her mistakes. She boiled our blood with her actions but redeemed herself in the end.

Queen of Tears is streaming on Netflix.
