Potluck Season 2 Review: Feel Good Family Drama is the Food for the Soul

Potluck Season 2 on SonyLiv stars Jatin Sial as Govind Shastri, Kitu Gidwani as Pramila Shasri, Cyrus Sahukar as Vikrant Shastri, Ira Dubey as Akanksha Shastri, Harman Singh as Dhruv Shastri, Saloni Khanna as Nidhi Shasri, Shikha Talsania as Prerna Shastri, Siddhant Karnick as Aalim, along with Varun Sood. Directed by Rajshree Ojha, the series is penned by Ashwin Lakshmi Narayan and Gaurav Lulla.

The synopsis reads, “Potluck is the story of the Shastri family where the members deal with the challenges of life and relationships often ending up in hilarious situations and seek solace in each other while continuing their tradition of potlucks.”

SonyLiv’s Potluck Season 2 Review Contains No Spoilers

In Potluck Season 2, the Shastri family is dealing with many changes. Akanksha has a new job, Vikrant is working from home while also looking after the kids, Dhruv has a career setback, Govind is finding new hobbies, and Pramila wants to participate in a beauty pageant competition. Prerna and Aalim’s relationship is also going through some ups and downs. Despite all the issues and changes, the Shastris always find a solution together. Will that happen again? We find out everything in the 8 episodes.

Pramila’s desire to compete in a beauty pageant is the main theme of season 2. Not everyone is accepting of her decision. One of her children believes she is going through a midlife crisis. But all Pramila wants is to do something for herself. After spending so many years being a wife, mother, and grandma, she wants to regain the sense of individuality she has lost amid these roles.

It is remarkable how the creators have established their points regarding Pramila’s newly found dreams. The conversations (monologues) when she speaks out for herself are never overly preachy. Alongside, there are major changes in Dhruv’s life too. His perfect life has to take a backseat as he has to start from scratch. His experience shows how a family is the essential source of encouragement during trying times.

Potluck Season 2 Still 1

The new season also focuses on Nidhi and her way of living, precisely working. That’s the most relatable part of the show for me. It was a season that was rather pleasant for Vikrant and Akanksha. It makes sense that the two have few problems, given the intense premise they were given in season one.

Prerna and Aalim’s relationship issues didn’t sit well with me. The writers want us to accept Prerna’s fears and concerns about being in a happy and healthy relationship without providing a comprehensive explanation. She appears more as an entitled person instead of someone who’s hurt in the past. She wasn’t the most likeable character this time.

Potluck Season 2 Still 2

Like season 1, the characters of Potluck are united and share hearty moments with some delicious and mouth-watering food. Despite the differences, confusion and troubles, food gives everyone some comfort. When there’s no food, the support, hugs and sometimes some scolding from the family members help. The series captures familial relationships and love beautifully.

Coming to performances, the star of Potluck Season 2 is Kitu Gidwani as Pramila Shastri. The last episode left me in splits, and Kitu has done a fantastic job. I do not want to give any spoilers, but I would pay for a stand-up show that features her. Saloni Khanna packs in some hilarious moments as Nidhi. Her character represents every millennial who has forgotten what it means to have a life. The rest of the cast does a great job too.
