Play Dirty Review
In Play Dirty, Wahlberg’s Parker must work together with Zen, a woman who betrayed him and killed his friends, to get his hands on a ton of money. The film questions his morals while highlighting his love for money. The film has all the hallmarks of a heist thriller, with a great cast and good production quality. However, the film feels hollow and unimpressive, mostly because I found it quite repetitive and, frankly, boring.
There’s a quirky humour in the film that is quite entertaining. It’s amusing and lightens the vibe of the thriller, and makes me chuckle quite a few times. Although the heist can get a bit boring sometimes, the humour will hold your interest more often than not. There’s a certain chaos to the story that makes you keep watching, as this band of baffoons are so all over the place that it’s a mess and a half to see everything come undone. There are a few breathtaking sequences that, in spite of being unbelievable, are absolutely intense to watch.
I found the heist sequences to be the most interesting, although I didn’t care much about the huge cast of characters. I think that’s the problem with this film. When we don’t watch things going up in flames, the downtime is thoroughly uninteresting. You want to skip forward to when things get silly and chaotic instead of being on the edge of your seat watching the story open up.
Parker shoots people or pushes them off buildings at the drop of a hat, and it’s amusing at first, but soon becomes unbearable and boring as the film moves on. People bicker for minutes on end as well, which tends to get a bit repetitive. At times, I wondered why we were watching another heist thriller and what the point of it all was.
Wahlberg has been in too many of these action films over the past year, and it’s all starting to mesh together for me. His last film, The Union, was sort of similar and was equally uninteresting. I think I am a little tired of watching him in these action-thriller films at this point. I mean, he’s fine, but his character isn’t anything new. The others are fine as well, but I think their talents are mostly wasted.
Final Thoughts
Play Dirty is fine, I guess, if you’re in the mood for something forgettable but also somewhat engaging in a way. I guess I don’t understand how this film is different from the rest of the hundreds of heist thrillers that are released every year. Nothing really made me take note of this film… maybe the humour at times. But that’s about it.
