Our Fault Review

In Our Fault, we finally reach the end of Nick and Noah’s romance with a lot of fanfare, including some absolutely ridiculous twists and turns, and storytelling that starts abruptly, goes somewhere equally abruptly, and ends with a fan service conclusion that is nothing short of baffling.

In the last instalment, the stepsiblings find themselves at odds once again, 4 years after their breakup. The film is reminiscent of the 50 Shades series and showcases Nick, a hotshot lawyer with a bo*er for revenge, trying to control his adult stepsister’s life because he wants to have his cake and eat it too. The hypocrisy is infuriating, and aside from young adults, this is unlikely to make anyone feel giddy in any way.

The film somehow doesn’t believe in following a believable narrative, and things just happen for the sake of it. Random people appear to hurt Nick and Noah, things go haywire and immediately get solved, and immediately after, some other random thing happens to keep the viewers invested. However, if you look beyond the unnecessary plot twists that go nowhere, it becomes clear that the story is severely lacking in both character and story building and resulting in a mush of stuff happening without rhyme or reason.

If you look hard enough, Our Fault is only interested in delivering twists without a thought about whether or not it makes sense or is needed. Suddenly, one character is pregnant, another character is in a coma for 5 seconds, and another character suddenly reappears and is then immediately pushed aside – it’s just one thing after another. You are never given the time to see the plot unfold because the film doesn’t give you time to truly take in the story or the characters’ reactions.

Nick and Noah continue to have absolutely no chemistry, and there isn’t even a minute when their relationship makes you feel anything close to romantic or aspirational. For most of the runtime, they are annoying brats who seem to have nothing better to do than pine for each other and fight. One can say that it can be an interesting plot device, but there’s literally so much happening that their relationship takes the backseat. There are a few lifeless sexual sequences that are cringy and feel unnecessary, and have been added because that’s what you’re supposed to do.

I think my biggest problem is that the film hardly makes sense. We jump from one plot device to another, and more often than not, I found myself asking how we got here. We simply jump from one thing to another, and it’s just so distracting that it feels like disjointed thoughts of a toddler. The solutions to these arbitrary problems are convenient and turn these problems into forgettable entities that leave you scratching your head in the end. I just don’t understand who these films target anymore because they are so terrible that, ideally, no one would find them entertaining. Or maybe that’s just me.

In the end, Our Fault is nothing new and adds nothing to an already terrible series. It’s lazy and uninspired and leaves you feeling confused about timelines. Viewers will be able to see right through the convenient plot devices meant to keep us interested because, if you look beyond the surface, the film has nothing better to do than trying to get a reaction out of us without making any effort to tell an effective and cohesive story.
