Obi Wan Kenobi Episode 5 Review: The One You Didn’t See Coming

Obi Wan Kenobi Episode 5 is now out on Disney+. The Star Wars series stars Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi/Ben, Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, Sung Kang as the Fifth Brother, Moses Ingram as Reva Sevander/Third Sister, Joel Edgerton as Owen Lards, Simone Kessel as Breha Organa, Vivien Lyra Blair as Leia Organa, Jimmy Smits as Senator Bail Organa, Kumail Nanjiani as Haja Estree, Grant Feely as Luke Skywalker and Indira Varma as Tala.

Directed by Deborah Chow and written by Joby Harold & Andrew Stanton, the episode is 40 minutes long. The synopsis reads, “Obi-Wan plans his next move as the Empire, closing in, tries to draw him out.”

Obi Wan Kenobi Episode 5 Recap/Review Contains Some Spoilers

In Obi Wan Kenobi Episode 5, Kenobi, Tala and Leia are on their way to Jabiim. However, the Third Sister/Reva puts a tracker on them and tells their whereabouts to Darth Vader. Vader is happy with Reva’s work and makes her the Grand Inquisitor. He tasks her with the mission of tracking and bringing Kenobi to him.

When Reva and Kenobi come face to face again, he confronts her with the truth. Obi Wan is aware that Reva is one of the Younglings from the Jedi Temple who witnessed Anakin Skywalker killing other children. Kenobi is aware that Reva wants to win Vader’s trust, only to kill him later. Obi Wan tells her that if they plan out things together, she can get her revenge.

In Obi Wan Kenobi Episode 5, there’s a flashback scene between Obi Wan and Anakin Skywalker. It’s the scene from Coruscant where Kenobi is training Anakin Skywalker with the lightsaber. Parts of the scene keep playing in between the present sequences.

Obi Wan Kenobi Episode 5 Still 1

The fifth episode of the Star Wars series had a lot going on. We finally learn Reva’s real purpose. Darth Vader is a powerful villain with many enemies. It’s interesting to see someone from the past is still around and remembers the hell he brought on people during his old days.

The episode also packs lots of worry, sentiments, tragedy and deaths. The Leia rescue mission took a grave turn, which Obi Wan wasn’t prepared to face. Seeing the terror in his face because of what his youngling Anakin has become is always chilling. But will he succeed in his mission? That’s something we find out in the end.

Lightsaber fights are always intriguing to watch. Episode 5 has a lot of it. One sequence will make you nostalgic and the other will leave you worried. Darth Vader is always scary when he has two red lightsabers in hand. In today’s episode, we witness that happening.

Overall, today’s episode was another punch in the gut while showing how menacing Darth Vader is. The flashback scenes are not easy to watch as it’s hard to believe what has become of Anakin. With only one episode left, we wonder how it will end and connect with the Star Wars sequel movies. The ending of today’s episode addressed young Luke Skywalker again. Is that a tease of another big threat that Obi Wan has to fight? We will find out what’s next in the final episode of the Kenobi series.
