The King’s Affection episode 9 starts with Ji-un and Yi-hwi kissing each other. Just kidding, that was Ji-un dreaming about making out with Yi-hwi. When he wakes up though he is left mortified and runs off to work. Meanwhile, Yi-hwi is in deep thought – she’s thinking back to last night and it seems like she’s really deep into the feels for Ji-un.

Lady Kim helps her snap out of it though and she is left a bit shocked when she realises that her first lecture is from Ji-un. Meanwhile, Ji-un is rushing to the lecture and is thrown back to last night when he sets his eyes on her. He stands under a tree slapping himself, wondering why he did such a thing last night. However, he can’t put off with the lecture any longer and must face the very uncomfortable session.

Yi-hwi brings up last night and Ji-un immediately rushes to apologise to her saying that he was too drunk. Surprisingly, Yi-hwi is quite chill about the entire thing and says that they should just laugh it off – alcohol makes people do such mistakes. Ji-un is relieved at what she says and tries to laugh it off saying that she looked beautiful under the moonlight. This, again, hilariously, makes the two hyper-aware and uncomfortable of the situation and Ji-un starts apologising again.

Yi-hwi tries to divert the attention and gives him a box of candies as a gift. She says that it’s a thank you gift because he went through a lot due to the Ming envoys so she wanted to do something nice for them. Ji-un is deliriously happy but when he reaches the teacher’s quarters, he realises that everyone got the same gift in The King’s Affection episode 9.

That night, King Hyejong talks to Lord Changchungun and tells him that Lord Sangheon has obtained the development rights in Yeoyeon using the Ming envoy as leverage. He asks him what purpose it will fulfil for them since Yeoyeon is constantly being invaded. He asks Changchungun to build his own army since that’s exactly what Ki-jae will do.

Meanwhile, Ji-un looks visibly upset and talks to his friends about how upset “someone he knows” feels because someone “they” kissed seems unfazed and nonchalant. Yeong-ji mentions that that person must really like them since that’s what causes jealousy. Ji-un wakes up the next daydreaming about making out with Yi-hwi.

Ki-jae is talking to Eunuch Cho and asks him why and where King Hyejong went out last night. However, Cho refuses to divulge anything at first. Ki-jae then blackmails him into telling him everything. On the other hand, Ji-un is seeing Yi-hwi everywhere and seems to be very in much love with her. But he’s afraid of the consequences and confused regarding what is going on since, you know, he thinks she is a guy.

Meanwhile, Queen Dowager spots Ha-gyeong and So-eun in the palace and seems interested in the former. The reason becomes clear later, but before that, Yi-hwi saves Ha-gyeong from falling down in the exact same way that everyone saves each other in this series. Ha-gyeong looks taken by Yi-hwi in The King’s Affection episode 9 but is left a little confused and embarrassed.

Later, in The King’s Affection episode 9, Queen Dowager asks King Hyejong, Yi-hwi and Ki-jae to get Yi-hwi married. She’s is shocked, as is the King. She, for obvious reasons. The King’s reasons are addressed by Ki-jae when the latter asks him whether he’s trying to put off the Yi-hwi’s marriage to give Prince Jehyeon the throne.

Yi-hwi is extremely concerned regarding this discussion in The King’s Affection episode 9, because, well, again, she’s a girl. As Bok-dong comforts her, telling her that she knew what she was getting into, Ha-gyeong tells So-eun that she will become the Crown Princess – that is her goal. Just then, So-eun sees Prince Changun harassing her maid and rushes to her aid. Although she apologises, Changun tries to misbehave with her, even trying to hit her. However, Ji-un stops him just before that happens and then starts to hit Ji-un! After the fight is broken up, So-eun thanks Ji-un and he asks them to rest since the incident must have startled them.

That night, in The King’s Affection episode 9, Yi-hwi jokingly asks Jaeun to use his influence and push back the Royal Wedding. After she brushes it off, Jaeun asks her whether she has ever fallen in love with anyone. Yi-hwi says that she did have some long ago when she was young and tells him the story of their relationship.

Ji-un meets Yi-hwi later on and straight-up asks her for a hug. He says that he’s a mess and asks her to indulge him for once. Although Bok-dong protests, Yi-hwi does indulge him. As Ji-un stands there and Yi-hwi hugs him, she says that she hopes he finds his strength. After she leaves, Ji-un is left looking back at her. Bok-dong asks her why she did that and she says that it’s because she likes him and that she should at least be allowed to do that since she’s supposed to get married soon.

Meanwhile, in The King’s Affection episode 9, Ji-un is thinking about Yi-hwi hugging him and learns about Yi-hwi’s upcoming nuptials. He looks quite jealous and concerned and the lecture is quite awkward. He asks her about her wedding and congratulates her on the great news. However, both seem quite heartbroken about it.

Ji-un later talks to Jaeun about one-sided love and asks him why he never told her. He says that expressing the feelings would have burdened her and put a distance between her and him. Jaeun then playfully tries to push Ji-un into the lake but the latter mentions his fear of water. This reminds him of the story Ji-un had told him about his childhood where he had fallen into the palace pond and Jaeun is finally able to connect the dots between Yi-hwi and Ji-un’s stories in The King’s Affection episode 9.

All of a sudden, Ji-un remembers the dice that Yi-hwi had given him and realises that he had left them the night he got drunk and kissed Yi-hwi. He is able to find them after rushing to get them and suddenly remembers something from that night. He remembers her taking the dice from him and then telling him that she had wondered for a long time what kind of a man he became. She then proceeds to kiss him on the lips. However, he was, unfortunately, sleeping during this encounter.

After remembering this, Ji-un rushes to meet Yi-hwi and then tells him that he thought he had impure feelings for her and that it was all a dream. However, it wasn’t a dream. He then professes his feelings for her, but then says that he’d understand if she didn’t feel the same. And although she’s a man and the Crown Prince, he is still in love with her.

Final Thoughts: The King’s Affection episode 9

The King’s Affection episode 9 has pushed things up a notch emotionally. Although it was inevitable, it’s still shocking to think how this Royal Wedding will take place considering Yi-hwi’s gender issue. Producing an heir in the traditional sense would be a challenge, to say the very least. Plus, her complicated relationship with Ji-un and Jaeun’s one-sided love is something that has become immediate at the moment. Plus, with Ji-un saying the three magic words, it’s going to be something to behold. I am guessing there’s going to be some drama, with Yi-hwi asking Ji-un to leave, but that’s definitely not going to stick. So, how will So-eun and Ha-gyeong work into this? Ah! 11 more episodes to go!
