[Apparently, the guy who got beaten up in the last episode was the Chief Eunuch Tae-gam, not the Crown Prince. Apologies for the mixup!]
After the last episode’s violent ending, The King’s Affection episode 8 starts with Yi-hwi being very brutally told off by her father. He’s disappointed in her more than anything, and honestly, I understand. It’s embarrassing for the king when his “son” beats the shit out of a guest of the kingdom. Yi-hwi is heartbroken and Ji-un comforts her.
Ji-un tends to her wounds later and he asks her to not be distant towards him. After she is well taken care of, she goes off to Lady Kim to take care of her. Lady Kim is, expectedly, extremely shaken up, but asks Yi-hwi to rest since her hand is also hurt. However, she shuts her down and asks her not to move. It is clear that Lady Kim holds a special maternal place in her heart and she cares for her deeply.
Just then, Bok-dong arrives and informs Yi-hwi that Tae-gam’s subordinate has invited her, the Vice Minister of Rites and Ji-un for a drink. Although a bit conflicted, she decides to go without guards so as not to create any more problems.
When she arrives though, there is no one there but her. It’s a peace offering, apparently, and he calls in this guy who is carrying a huge sword. Yi-hwi and Ga-on are both shocked and Tae-gam asks for a match between Ga-on and him, apparently to resolve the issue. Yi-hwi counts herself out, but Tae-gam asks his guard to beat Ga-on up regardless. As the fighting begins, Yi-hwi is horrified and tries to stop it but the guard tries to hurt her, and Ga-on takes the sword’s blow in her place. Ji-un arrives just in time to stop the madness.
I wonder how people from outside Joseon can just do these things to the locals, especially when it comes to the Crown Prince. It’s shocking that they get to get away with trying to murder the Prince. However, I must say that Park Ki-woong, who plays Tae-gam, is excellent at making us hate him.
Anyway, when Yi-hwi asks him what he wants in The King’s Affection episode 8, Tae-gam says that he wants to destroy people like her who were born with a silver spoon and thus the empathy that they show for the poor is just hypocritical. Anyway, it’s a flurry in the palace as Yi-hwi and the gang try to help an unconscious and bleeding Ga-on.
Meanwhile, Jaeun wonders about the hug between Ji-un and Yi-hwi that he witnessed previously. He’s a bit concerned and possibly jealous, but he’s a gentleman till now and I get his feelings. When a palace official tells him of what transpired previously, he immediately asks him whether Yi-hwi is ok and is relieved to know that she is.
Jaeun then goes off to meet Tae-gam. It feels like under his calm exterior is a terrible storm – he means business. He asks Tae-gam why he hurt Ga-on and Tae-gam tries to brush it off. However, he says that he knows a story – someone the Emperor trusts dearly has been stealing offerings to the Emperor. On top of that, he is also stealing the Emperor’s private assets. Tae-gam looks SHOOK – like, he’s visibly shaken. The veiled threat looks good on Jaeun, who is otherwise a great, but timid, character. He leaves after telling Tae-gam to behave the rest of this stay.
Meanwhile, Yi-hwi is worried sick for Ga-on and sits with him while he sleeps. However, a nightmare wakes him up and he apologises to her for not doing his duty properly. Yi-hwi brushes it off and asks him why he was suffering even in his dreams. When he doesn’t reply, she asks him to rest since his wounds are severe and leave. Ga-on is taken by the Crown Prince’s generosity.
Outside, Yi-hwi meets Jaeun who enquires whether Ga-on is all right. Yi-hwi tells him that she is burdened because everyone around her is suffering because of her. However, Jaeun tells her that it’s not her fault – it’s the Chief Eunuch’s. He tells her to inform him if he tries anything with her since he’s dangerous.
Later, in The King’s Affection episode 8, Jaeun enlists Ji-un’s help in order to look into this mysterious man who was in Tae-gam’s room earlier. Ji-un agrees to help his friend.
The next morning, Yi-hwi is shocked to know that they have to double their tribute and enquires whether Tae-gam demanded this as well. She volunteers to speak to him, but King Hyejong asks her to not involve herself further. However, Yi-hwi insists on doing this herself and asks for her father’s faith in her. Coming back to her room, she is determined to know more about Tae-gam.
That night in The King’s Affection episode 8, Yi-hwi catches a masked Ji-un tailing Tae-gam who is up to something shady. However, he is caught later on and the guards try to kill him in an epic swordfight but a masked Yi-hwi jumps in at just the right time to give him a helping hand.
As they are fighting, Tae-gam is apparently selling some things off to the mysterious man and asks him to never blackmail him using “her” again. He promises to do so. We don’t know who this man is, neither to whom “her” refers. As the fighting gets intense, Jaeun gets there with a hoard of guards and asks them to arrest anyone who caused a nuisance. He also spots Tae-gam and gives chase.
Meanwhile, in The King’s Affection episode 8, Yi-hwi tends to Ji-un’s wounds. Her concern for him touches Ji-un and the former asks him to lean on her as they walk back. Meanwhile, Jaeun catches Tae-gam and passive-aggressively asks him what’s going on since he has to keep him “safe” so that such an incident is never repeated. Outside, he asks the guards to keep an eye on in order to find the secret ledger.
On the other hand, Ji-un and Yi-hwi’s relationship deepens but when they reach Jaeun, she tells him that she can’t believe that they didn’t include her in their plans. But she insists to join now taking both the guys by surprise.
The next day, Ji-un and Yi-hwi go off to find out about the mystery man in The King’s Affection episode 8. They find news at a pawn shop, where the man gives them the jewellery that the man sold off and he also lets them know that the man is a gambling addict and is also arrogant since his daughter became an imperial concubine in Ming.
Armed with his information, the three formulate a plan and capture the man and are mostly successful, except Ji-un is hurt again by Tae-gam’s men and Ga-on seems to be extremely excited about killing the guards. The swordfight is an excellent watch, especially because actor Choi Byung-chan is extremely charismatic.
Yi-hwi and Ji-un again spend some really tender moments as she tends to his wounds once more. Anyway, after they get home, the three of them talk to the mysterious man to know Tae-gam’s secrets. Afterwards, she goes off to have drinks with Tae-gam and makes it known that she has his ledger and knows about what he has been doing. Yi-hwi threatens him and wonders whether he has more secrets like this one. This makes Tae-gam more uncomfortable.
After she leaves, Tae-gam meets with the mysterious man and is angry that he told her everything. However, he mentions something interesting – that they have to do something otherwise if Tae-gam’s relationship with “her” is revealed, then they would both get into a lot of trouble. He asks him to protect her and this annoys him further.
Well, it turns out that Yi-hwi knows everything about Tae-gam, his past and his relationship with Ming’s concubine. However, she seems to take a softer approach to this mess. His life is indeed sad, with his parents selling him off as a child. She says that she understands why he did what he did. Tae-gam cannot believe that Yi-hwi is being too benevolent and understand and leaves saying that he doesn’t need her pity. However, she apologises to him as the Crown Prince of Joseon and says that she will take his affair to the grave.
This catches Tae-gam by surprise and his eyes fill up with tears when she says that she somewhat understands where he came from. A flashback reveals Tae-gam’s past and his relationship with the Ming concubine and honestly, as much as I want to hate him, I get his anger. As Tae-gam goes back home, it is apparent that he’s a changed man and is much calmer and happier. Both Ji-un and Jaeun realise who brought about this change.
That night, in The King’s Affection episode 8, Ji-un, Yi-hwi, Jaeun and Ga-on have a drink together and it’s such a light and funny moment – whenever he tries to get close to Yi-hwi to talk to her, Ga-on stops him. The cherry on the top is when Ga-on escorts Ji-un back to his room by pulling him by the arm. It’s hilarious as he continues to beg Ga-on to have one more drink with him.
That night, Yi-hwi goes out for a stroll and goes through the secret door in the garden. Once on the other side, she is shocked to find her old home, which was previously dilapidated and is now strikingly beautiful. Admiring the beauty, she is shocked to hear Ji-un calling out to her in The King’s Affection episode 8.
They chat about the place and how he spruced it up and then he asks her not to smile like that – making it a bit awkward. However, it is pretty apparent that he is totally swooning over Yi-hwi and after a gulp of alcohol, he makes up the courage to kiss her on the cheek, shocking her.
Final Thoughts: The King’s Affection episode 8
The King’s Affection episode 8 is another interesting episode that has tons of fighting, planning and plotting and, most importantly, some great moments of friendship. I loved the dynamics between the three protagonists and it was a heartwarming watch. I do, however, feel that there’s going to be a jealousy angle coming in soon and I hope that it doesn’t ruin the dynamic among the three.
Also, I understand that Tae-gam’s character went through a lot, but good god what he did at Joseon is horrendous regardless of his past.
The King’s Affection is streaming on Netflix.
