– Dam-i will henceforth be called Lee-hwi –

Ji-un helps Lee-hwi by giving her his hat in The King’s Affection episode 5 and she is enamoured by the care and affection that he shows her. Jaeun also gets there and approaches the two asking Ji-un how dare he touch the Crown Prince but is shocked to find that it’s his friend. Lee-hwi, meanwhile, is shocked to know that the two know each other previously, more so when she remembers badmouthing Ji-un in front of Jaeun.

As the pair fight over a book, Bok-dong and Ga-on find them but Jaeun turns it on them. At the palace gates, Lee-hwi gives Jaeun the ring back and tells him that he will have better use of it than her. Lady Kim finds her blushing while holding the hat later on and is left a bit shocked to know the story.

In a flashback, we see that Jaeun has known all along of Lee-hwi’s true identity. One day, he brings a kitten (the most adorable one ever!) over to Lee-hwi but has to hide when Lee-hwi (now Dam-i) comes into her room with her mother and grandfather. He overhears her talking to her mother about her late brother and that although she might not be as good as her brother, no one should be able to know the difference. So, it feels like, in the present in The King’s Affection episode 5, Jaeun had actually given Lee-hwi the ring.

The next day, in The King’s Affection episode 5, Lee-hwi gives Ji-un his hat and asks him to never repeat the behaviour again. She also enquires about his friendship with Jaeun. Ji-un’s affection for Lee-hwi, and the other way around, become apparent as the days pass. So does Jaeun’s affection for Lee-hwi. The ball incident, especially, thaws Lee-hwi’s heart a bit.

Later, in The King’s Affection episode 5, Lee-hwi goes around looking through the tutors’ quarters as a way of taking Ji-un’s lessons to heart. One by one everyone’s lax treatment comes to the forefront and she screams at everyone. When King Hyejong comes along, he is shocked to find everyone scrambling to organize themselves!

Ji-un senses that Lee-hwi’s inspections are doing worse than good and asks her to accompany him somewhere. He takes him to a place from where she can see the whole palace, he lets her know that it is impossible for people to be perfect all the time since they are also human at the end of the day. He tells her she must trust their love and respect for the king and for the people of Joseon instead of making assumptions based on what she sees.

However, she calls him naïve in The King’s Affection episode 5. She says that it is difficult to trust people when all they do is deceive and kill others for their own gains and remembers her mother’s words of only looking out for others. But he reminds her to not distance herself too much. That night, his words come true when she dismisses all the maids after one of them faint. However, it seems that Ga-on has something else in mind.

The next day, the guards find Un-am dead. Seok-jo talks to another palace member that this is the second person to die of the people who testified against Preceptor Kang ten years ago. He seems worried about the incident and says that he doesn’t think that Un-am killed himself.

Later, Prince Changwun doubts that Lee-hwi is gay and orders one of the courtesans to drug the Crown Prince. Ga-on catches her and he gets in trouble when Queen Dowager orders him to apologise to Lee-hwi. The icing on the cake is, however, when Ki-jae gets to know of the incident and slaps him across the face in front of Lee-hwi. He tells him that this time the Queen Dowager protected him. Next time he will make sure that Changwun doesn’t stay alive.

Lee-hwi suggests that he be put under house arrest, but Ki-jae takes her empathy as weakness and tells her that she won’t be able to become great if she continues on this path. Outside, in The King’s Affection episode 5, Jaeun, too, beats Changwun and tells him to stop harassing Lee-hwi. Otherwise, he will not stop at cutting off a few beads. As Jaeun leaves, Changwun is left fuming.

The next morning, in The King’s Affection episode 5, Ji-un tries to check whether a sleeping Lee-hwi has a fever, but before he can do that, she senses him and thinks that she is being attacked. She jumps up and tries to strangle him but lets him go when he tells her that he’s the Royal Tutor. As she stumbles up, she walks into the bookshelf and destabilises a container when is about to fall on her. Ji-un swoops in and saves her from another accident.

Final Thought: The King’s Affection episode 5

The King’s Affection episode 5 is another episode that consists of a ton of fluff but very little solid plot. There’s still a lot of Ji-un saves Lee-hwi and looks longingly into each other’s eyes, or Jaeun saves Lee-hwi and looks longingly into each other’s eyes. But other than a sliver of conspiracy brewing on the horizon, there’s very little to go on. Maybe this conspiracy is what will save the series in the long run; however, I can almost see how that’s going to end. Either way, it’s a nice show to watch when you want something light (till now). Thank god this episode was shorter than the rest.

The King's Affection episode 5 is another episode with a lot of fluff and too little interesting plot. However, it does hint at a larger conspiracy that might just be the series' saving grace.
