The King’s Affection episode 4 starts with Jil-geum and Yeong-ji getting viciously beaten while Ji-un watches in horror. The latter has no power to stop the soldiers and is shocked when he comes face to face with his father. Seok-jo tells him that the only way for his friends to be safe is if he takes up a proper job at the palace. Without any choice in the matter, he is forced to become Dam-i’s tutor.

Although Dam-i is shocked, she doesn’t have much say at the moment but goes to her father to revoke Ji-un’s appointment. The King tells her that the tutor was appointed by the Left State Councilor and thus, he asks for proof of her claim. She asks him to question a few court maids and such, but everyone says that they have never met Ji-un putting Dam-i in an awkward position.

Meanwhile, in The King’s Affection episode 4, Ji-un is getting a crash course on who is whom in the Royal Family. However, his tutor (or mentor?) is shocked to realise that Ji-un already knows a lot about the Royal Family.

Dam-i, Bok-dong and Lady Kim discuss the possibility of the tutor getting to know Dam-i’s true identity. However, she says that that will not happen since she will make sure Ji-un leaves his work as soon as possible. The next day, she asks him to transcribe two huge columns of books with footnotes so that he gets frustrated and leaves. The other tutors take pity on him and ask him to stay strong since it only gets more difficult from here.

Later, in The King’s Affection episode 4, Dam-i prepares a light meal with drinks to congratulate Ji-un on becoming a tutor. However, as the other tutors have already warned him that the Crown Prince wants to get him drunk so that he makes mistakes, Ji-un has come prepared. Even after copious amounts of alcohol, he does not seem to lose his senses, frustrating everyone around him.

Later on, Ji-un meets Lord Jaeun and the two discuss how difficult it is for the former to tutor the Crown Prince. Ji-un is frustrated but really, what can he do about it? The next day, Dam-i meets Jaeun and tells him that Ji-un is sly and anyone who is friends with him is also the same as him. When it comes time for her lecture, she disregards Bok-dong’s call and goes off to practice archery.

Ji-un meets Dam-i and asks her why she wants to kick him out. He just wants to help her study and teach her moral principles. At that, Dam-i tells him that he’s not one who can teach anyone moral principles since he operated Samgaebang. He asks her whether she will ignore him forever and she says that she will try as much as possible until he resigns. He refuses to resign though, shocking her.

She insults him, calling him an opportunist like his father, which hurts him. Thus, Ji-un offers a compromise in The King’s Affection episode 4. He wants to make a wager – if he loses he will resign, if he wins she has to attend his lectures. The wager is: she has to get the highest mark on the upcoming exam given by all lecturers, including him. Everyone will attend the session so that he cannot fail her on purpose. Dam-i is intrigued but refuses to accept the bet until he offers his life to her.

Ji-un accepts and Dam-i points her arrow at him. Everyone has come over to witness what is going on. However, Dam-i, of course, does not hit him and accepts his bet because of his courage. This stunt lands her in trouble with her grandfather who asks him to not create such a spectacle in broad daylight. However, he does tell her in The King’s Affection episode 4 to let go of silly matters and keep the people who are on her side close. The palace is a dirty place to be.

The next day, he gives Dam-i a pouch full of seeds and tells her that only when the seeds become a plant will she be able to answer his questions in the upcoming test. This is both the test and her assignment. However, she cannot let her subordinates do the task since only she can answer the questions. Dam-i is left confused with the seeds and how to sprout them!

As she’s roaming around with Bok-dong wondering what to do with those seeds, she comes face-to-face with a handsome stranger who seems to be waiting to meet her. He’s Kim Ga-on and he’s going to be her bodyguard from then on. No one seems to know who this is and everyone is left confused.

Bok-dong goes over the rules with Ga-on who seems to not care about them. That’s proved when they are following Dam-i around the palace. While the royal maids fawn over him, he refuses to walk five steps back, annoying Dam-i. She asks everyone to step away from her and then asks Ga-on who he works for. However, he wins everyone’s hearts by saying that he works for no one other than Dam-i.

Back in her room in The King’s Affection episode 4, Dam-i is desperately trying to find the answer to Ji-un’s riddle. She finds the gift that Ji-un had given her all those years ago and wonders whether it’s attached to that “Yeon-seon” paper.

Anyway, on the day of the exam in The King’s Affection episode 4, Ji-un asks Dam-i whether she was able to figure out what seed she was given. She tells him that it is a lotus seed. He asks that she’s correct, so why did he give her a lotus seed? She answers him from her heart which wins everyone’s approval. Unfortunately, it’s not the answer Ji-un was looking for and he fails her. Much to everyone’s shock, the King tells Ji-un that he’s extraordinary and his answer was exceptional.

Dam-i, however, feels heartbroken and is unable to have a good time that night. Seeing that she’s not sitting with them, he goes off to find her. He apologises for hurting her and she says that what he said was impressive since no one ever dared to say such a thing before this. However, she asks him to be more careful after this since making such statements is quite dangerous in the palace. Ji-un says that he is aware but is not afraid of the consequences.

The next day, in The King’s Affection episode 4, Dam-i and Lord Jaeun go out and stroll the market. She bumps into a woman who seems to have taken an interest in her and I am sure this is going to work into the story somehow later on. Later, she goes to a shop and gets interested in a pretty ring. Unfortunately, due to her masquerading as a man, she is unable to get that.

Anyway, Jaeun runs off with Dam-i through a backdoor, much to Ga-on and Bok-dong’s dismay. It’s funny to watch the two acting like teenagers escaping their guardians and having tons of fun. He gives her the ring that she was looking at earlier but tells her to give it to her betrothed. He saves her from getting soaked and it feels like she’s having feelings for him. She also seems to have feelings for Ji-un as he helps her put on his hat.

Final Thoughts: The King’s Affection episode 4

The King’s Affection is getting messier by the minute. Of course Dam-i’s feelings are going to play a huge role in the series since it’s literally called “The King’s Affection”. However, with three eligible bachelors lurking around the future “king”, it’s going to be a difficult battle from here on out. This episode was somewhat entertaining, with some really interesting perspectives to look at. However, the series still seems to be missing something that can glue us to the screen. Let’s wait for future episodes to see where it all goes.
