The King’s Affection episode 1 starts with the birth of twins. The Royal Family, however, is displeased by the news – a boy sharing the same womb as a girl is apparently unacceptable. After much bloodshed throughout the maternity ward so as no one knows that the future crown prince was a twin, the Royal Highness hides her daughter and then sends her away from the palace so that she at least survives.

Many years later, teenager Yi-hwi comes face-to-face with his twin, Dam-i. When he asks his mother about her, she is shocked and very scared and mentions to never speak of such things in front of anyone else. Dejected, Yi-hwi drops the subject, but curiosity gets the best of him later on.

Meanwhile, Yi-hwi’s teacher, whom he is very fond of, is arrested by the king for disrupting the peace of the court – Yi-hwi’s father is shocked to hear that he is being punished for asking questions!

Regardless, Yi-hwi invites Dam-i to the palace and is shocked and surprised to find her to be his exact copy. They even wear the exact same clothes and the resemblance only increases. The ploy here is that he switches places with Dam-i to get out of the palace and find his teacher. On the other hand, at the palace, Dam-i enjoys snacks meant for the prince.

However, as the evening rolls around, royal life starts to have its toll on Dam-i in The King’s Affection episode 1. Thus, when her father comes to visit her suddenly, she knocks her table over and has to scramble to get everything in order. Meanwhile, Yi-hwi has also come back to the palace. As he is about to go to his room, he sees that his father is already there!

The meeting isn’t as disastrous as she thought though and she tides over her father’s questions effortlessly. As she’s going home, she catches the eye of another member of the palace, Ji-un, who follows her to her home. However, a slight tussle over the Zuo Zhuan pushes them over into a pool where she saves him from drowning. The book is ruined though, much to Dam-i’s chagrin.

Ji-un, however, makes the effort to not only train to be a better swordsman but also makes another copy of the Zuo Zhuan for Dam-i in The King’s Affection episode 1. He later asks her to go to the festival with him. Later, Yi-hwi is shocked at the tidiness of the Zuo Zhuan and tells her that whoever wrote it has romantic feelings for her.

But the bad news is also on the way – Dam-i gets called by the Royal Highness and Yi-hwi is told that his teacher will be beheaded. Dam-i’s meeting with her mother goes as well as one can imagine – it was pretty awkward for her considering she has no idea what’s going on. On the other hand, the Royal Highness cannot keep her emotions in check.

The next day in The King’s Affection episode 1, Dam-i goes on with Ji-un to the festival and they have a great time together. As the day comes to an end, he tells her that although she has a beautiful name, he wishes to call her by something meaningful and thus calls her Yeon-seon. They promise to meet in three days as she wishes to give him something too.

Meanwhile, Ji-un’s father realizes who Dam-i is. The news soon spreads and she is hunted by one and all to be killed. It is the same day she is supposed to meet Ji-un at the bridge. However, if it wasn’t complicated enough already, it’s the Prince who is at the fair that day, not Dam-i. After a tense chase sequence, the Prince is killed in the forest.

At the palace, Dam-i knows nothing of what’s happened outside and is caught.

The King’s Affection episode 1: Thoughts

The King’s Affection episode 1 starts with tons of bloodshed and violence and an interesting chase sequence. If the first episode is any indication, the series is going to have some action and mind games along with the run-of-the-mill romance and drama aspects. It’s a lot of information to take in in one episode and the sheer number of characters can get a little tricky to keep up with (I really tried!) Either way though, I am hopeful that the rest of the series will keep delivering as many things to follow as this one.
