Netflix’s New World: Get to Know the Celebrity Cast of the Korean Reality-TV!

Netflix’s new reality show ‘New World’ is Korean and unscripted- the two most exciting things the audience love! The show creator is Cho Hyo-jin, who we all know for creating the fan favourite ‘Running Man’. It is produced by Company SangSang which is responsible for the series ‘Busted!’ and ‘Twogether’. Presently, the first two episodes of the show are out and it will get a weekly release with two episodes that will release every Friday.

The show takes into account six Korean celebrities on a utopian island where they spend six days earning virtual currencies that they will be able to cash on the final day when they leave the island. The island is called ‘New World’ and provides them with shelter, food and fun activities. Throughout their stay, the celebrities need to strategize to save and earn additional money on the island to go home with the most amount. Amongst these six celebrities, few we might know by heart and, few we don’t. So, let us have a look at who these people are!

Kai

Kim Jong-in or, more popularly known as Kai is a member of the Korean boy band EXO, which is a subunit of Exo-K and recently, debuted as a soloist with the release of his EP ‘Kai (开)’. However, Kai has not limited himself to music as we have previously seen him on television. We have seen him starring in K-dramas namely, ‘Choco Bank’ (2016), ‘Andante’ (2017), ‘Spring Has Come’ (2018) and has given a brilliant performance in an episode of ‘Men on a Misson.’

Heechul

Kim Hee-chul or, better known mononymously as Heechul belongs to the Korean boy group Super Junior and has also been a part of the subgroup Super Junior-T. This experienced emcee has also appeared on ‘Men on a Mission’ just like Kai. Heechul actually made his debut in the industry, not through music but through acting by appearing on the teen drama ‘Sharp 2.’ Thereon after, Heechul has been involved with distinguished projects such as ‘Radio Star’ and has debuted as a soloist through the release of his digital single ‘Old Movie.’

Lee Seung-gi

The cast of ‘New World’ seems to be heavily dominated by the music industry as our third celebrity on the list is a singer too. Actor, singer, host, Lee Seung-gi has given us many hit tracks starting from ‘Will You Marry Me’ to ‘The Ordinary Man.’ He has performed the leading roles in significant Korean dramas- ‘Brilliant Legacy’ (2009), ‘My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho’ (2010), ‘The King 2 Hearts’ (2012), ‘Gu Family Book’ (2013), ‘You’re All Surrounded’ (2014) and ‘A Korean Odyssey’ (2017–2018). Known as the triple threat to the industry, Lee Seung-gi has won the Best Male Variety Performer at the 2021 Baeksang Arts Awards.

Park Na-rae

South Korean comedian, Park Na-rae made her debut on ‘Gag Concert’ (1999-2020). Since then, she has not only written a book but, also has been voted for the Comedian of the Year Award. In 2019, she released a Netflix special stand-up comedy show titled ‘Park Na-rae: Glamour Warning,’ becoming the first Korean female comedian to do so. She was also invited to participate in the Netflix Is A Joke Fest prior to being on Netflix’s New World.

Jo Bo-ah

The South Korean actress best known for her compelling roles in ‘Temperature of Love’ (2017), ‘Goodbye to Goodbye’ (2018), ‘My Strange Hero’ (2018), ‘Forest’ (2020), and ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed’ (2020), Jo Bo-ah is also a distinguished model in the industry. She has won various accolades for her acting performance, such as the SBS Entertainment Awards, KBS Drama Awards and The Seoul Awards.

Eun Ji-won

This South Korean rapper is the leader of the first generation idol group Sechs Kies which was disbanded in 2000. Since then, Eun Ji-won has pursued a career as a soloist releasing ‘Drunk on Melody’, ‘My Love’ and various other tracks. However, in 2016 the band returned after 16 years through the popular program titled ‘Infinite Challenge’ and have thereon after returned to be promoted as a group. The artist has also been a part of shows including ‘2 Days & 1 Night’, ‘Reply 1997,’ ‘New Journey to the West’ and ‘Kang’s Kitchen.’
