Lumberjack the Monster Ending Explained

In the final moments of Lumberjack the Monster, the monster ends up taking Emi hostage, which compels Akira to pursue the monster to his den. After a face-off that injures Akira, he tells the monster that he knows the person behind the mask and it is better for him to take the mask off. Complying with the statement, the monster takes his mask off to reveal a beaten Kenmochi underneath.
In quick flashbacks and monologues, it is revealed that Kenmochi’s neuro-chip broke two years ago when he was hit by a cop making him capable to feeling human emotions such as rage, empathy and more. This slowly changed him, so much so that he even killed his wife because he was set on the path to reform the psychopaths in society.
Akira manipulates Kenmochi to fight for Emi by leveraging Emi’s life. He, in fact, takes Emi hostage from Kenmochi and threatens to kill her. He also accepts killing Emi’s father. This gives rise to a wave of compassion and empathy in Kenmochi which urges him to fight Akira for Emi’s life. Ultimately, Emi gets saved as Akira manages to injure Kenmochi.
This strange occurrence is followed by Akira’s revelation that his neurochip has also been broken since Kenmochi’s attack. As Akira lights a cigarette and relates to Kenmochi’s cause, he realizes that Kenmochi is his childhood pal Takeshi. Kenmochi reveals that the connection he has made is true and, apologizes for not being able to save him when they were young.

As Kenmochi takes his last breaths, Akira leaves with an unconscious Emi. On the other hand, Toshiro reaches the spot with her team only to find Kenmochi trapped and dying in a burning building. She later confronts Akira and, tells him that she will get to him.
As the movie comes to a close, we see Akira return home from a day of work to Emi. He apologizes and, we can assume that it is the first time they are seeing each other after their horrible night with the monster. When Akira hugs Emi to comfort her, Emi stabs him with a knife. This comes as a shock to Akira to attack Emi immediately. But, he does not kill her.
He leaves a prominent strangulation mark on Emi’s neck and prompts that now the scene will look like self-defence. Emi is stunned, as she thought Akira had only used her till now. Akira urges Emi to run as he bleeds to death.
