Lin Manuel Miranda is Very Close to Getting Entertainment Grand Slam? Read On

The multi-talented actor-director Lin Manuel Miranda popularly known for the creation of the Broadway musical Hamilton has many accolades to his name. These include three Tony Awards, three Grammy Awards, two Laurence Olivier Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, a MacArthur Fellowship Award, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a Pulitzer Prize.

He rose to fame by co-creating the songs of Disney’s Moana. His songwriting for Moana was praised by the critics and appreciated by the audience as well. Recently he collaborated with director Jared Bush for his animated musical Encanto. Its song We Don’t Talk About Bruno broke records, and made it the number-one song on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles charts, marking his prominence. He also directed Andrew Garfield starter biographical film Tick, Tick…Boom! which marked his debut as a film director.

Lin Manuel Miranda is one step closer to the entertainment world’s Grand Slam — EGOT — after earning an Oscar nomination in the best original song category for ‘Dos Oruguitas’ in Disney’s ‘Encanto’.

Lin Manuel Miranda, reports ‘Variety’, already has an Emmy (E), Tony (T) and Grammy (G). What he needs now is an Oscar to join the elite group of artists who have achieved the status, including John Legend, Marvin Hamlisch and Robert Lopez. Composer Alan Menken was the most recent artiste to attain EGOT status in 2020, when he won an Emmy for outstanding original song in a children’s, young adult or animated programme for ‘Waiting in the Wings’ from another Disney film — ‘Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure’.

Lin Manuel Miranda also has the rare distinction of winning a Pulitzer Prize for ‘Hamilton’. At present, according to ‘Variety’, only two other people in the world who hold that honour Hamlisch (‘The Way We Were’ and ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’) and Richard Rodgers (of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame).

Hamlisch is the only music composer to belong to the P(Pulitzer)EGOT super-elite. The number will go up to two if Lin Manuel Miranda gets the golden statuette — the ultimate possession of any performer.
