IT – Welcome to Derry Episode 6 Recap

The episode opens in 1935 in Juniper Hills Asylum. A nurse takes a young girl to the basement to meet Pennyise, thinking that it’s only in her head. However, when “the clown” really appears in front of them, things take a dangerous turn.

In the present, Leroy and Will fight about staying safe after the events in the sewers, but the conversation goes sideways after Leroy hits him and he refuses to obey him, choosing instead to help his friends. Meanwhile, a manhunt starts for Hank, which leaves Ronnie heartbroken, while Lilly and the others plan to kill Pennywise once and for all. However, this starts a fight between Lilly and Ronnie, and the group breaks up after that.

Elsewhere, Dick Halloran finds himself a bit out of it after his encounter with Pennywise and seeing Pauly’s ghost. Thus, when he realises that his colleagues are hiding Hank at their hideout, he is left completely shocked. However, Hank’s emotional reunion with Ronnie softens everyone’s hearts a little bit.

The next morning, Dick opens up to Leroy about his telepathic abilities and how Pennywise destabilised his mental health by taking off “the lid” in his mind. However, his vulnerable confession leads nowhere, and Leroy tries to bark orders at him, resulting in Dick forcing him out of the room. As Charlotte, too, walks out of Leroy’s house, Lilly finds it difficult to resume normal life as Pennywise continues to torment her.

As Will and the others go to meet Hank, Lilly arrives at Ingrid’s and walks right into her home and stumbles upon a photo album containing pictures of a man who looks suspiciously similar to Pennywise. As Ingrid consoles her, her eyes wander to a picture of the same man in a clown costume, and she suddenly realises that this is Pennywise – Ingrid is somehow connected to Pennywise! In the end, Ingrid confesses to following them around in a clown costume, hoping to see Pennywise somehow.

As it turns out, Pennywise was Ingrid’s father, and she has been feeding children to him with the hope of talking to him. Her first encounter with Pennywise, although traumatic, gave him a glimpse of her father, and she has been desperate to free him ever since. She has been feeding him children all this time on a futile quest.

Disgusted that someone close to her would hurt her like this, she denies her request to join her on this mission and, essentially, pushes her friends to their deaths, and can’t help but cry out in desperation for a glimmer of hope. Meanwhile, the other kids finally have a moment to bond while trying to convince Ronnie to join them to defeat Pennywise, while Clint Bowers creates a mob to try and get his hands on Hank.

In the last scene, as the kids enjoy a night of somewhat adult fun, Ingrid gets ready in her clown costume, while the mob arrives at the bar with guns in hand, ready to get Hank from them.

Episode 6, touching on Pennywise’s backstory and Ingrid’s connection to him, is much like what we have already seen in other IT franchises. The episode is engaging and exciting, but I stand by my point that this series would’ve been more hard-hitting if we got all the episodes released at the same time. Either way, I found the backstory interesting, especially Ingrid’s role in the entire thing, but the true tension seems to still be kept for the upcoming episodes. In the end, this one’s a good watch, especially the racial tension in Derry that feels more terrifying than any killer clown.
