Inventing Anna’s Julia Garner Says, “You Can Actually Hate My Character But…”

After Ozark’s fourth season, Julia Garner is tapped in to make her return on Netflix through the miniseries Inventing Anna. The show is created and produced by Shonda Rhimes and, based on the New York article by Jessica Pressler How Anna (Sorokin) Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People. Garner is coming out of Ruth’s character to play the titular role in this series. Journalist and editor, Jessica Pressler also serves as the show’s producer.

This is Julia Garner’s third television series where the actress takes the mantle of the main character after Netflix’s crime thriller shows Ozark and Dirty John. The talented actress has already two Primetime Emmys and, her 2019 film The Assistant did receive a lot of critical praise. Thus, it is going to be interesting to see how the actress nails her new character. In Netflix’s Inside the Character of Anna Delvey video, Garner describes her acting process and how she prepared to play the role of the infamous con artist who pretended to be a wealthy German heiress.

Julia Garner gives us key insights into Anna’s character of how she was a Russian girl pretending to be a German heiress to sweep the art and fashion of New York’s elite society. Garner discloses how getting the accent right was one of the major things for her in preparing for the show. The Perks of Being a Wallflower actress revealed how she learned the German accent and mushed it with bits of Russian to get in Anna Delvey’s shoes.

Julia Garner also talks about the importance of fashion to her character and, how it was an essential cloak for Delvey to merge into the New York high society. Garner used a wig and fake teeth, along with the required costume to get transformed into the character she was playing. She adds, “You don’t have to love my character. You can actually hate my character, but you have to at least want to understand Anna.”

Along with Garner, the cast also includes Anna Chlumsky, Katie Lowes, Laverne Cox, Alexis Floyd, Arian Moayed, Anders Holm, Anna Deavere Smith, Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney, Jennifer Esposito and Anthony Edwards.
