His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 2 Ending Explained
His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 2 is titled ‘The Break’ and the ending of the episode reveals exactly the reason why. Will ends up finding Lyra with much help from the fairies. The bearer of the Subtle Knife, Will opens a portal to reach Lyra who is held a prisoner in a remote cave. He also meets Marisa there whose plan to lure in Will by capturing Lyra seems to be successful but, Will has different plans and it includes escaping with Lyra.
Thus, Will tries to create a portal in the cave from which he might escape with Lyra but, Marisa uses her manipulative skills to stop him. As Will tries to cut a portal using the knife, Marisa keeps distracting him by asking him about his mother. This not only results in Will losing his concentration and becoming mentally weak but, also breaks the knife- the most powerful and desired object in the Universe. Once the knife breaks, Will is of no use to Marisa, who tries to shoot him but, Lyra steps in the way and asks her mother to let them go.
However, a tiny fairy ends up stinging Marisa which makes her unconscious. The fairy is, of course, sent by Lord Asriel and she wants Will and Lyra to come with her. But, Lyra is against the notion of meeting Asriel, who she thinks is no different than Marisa and the two escape. Outside the cave, Will and Lyra are attacked but, are saved with the help of Lorek and the mute girl, Ama.
Will and Lyra exit through the portal outside the cave and Will closes it but, not properly. So, the fairy follows them through the portal too. At the very end, Asriel lands at the scene but, only ends up finding an unconscious Marisa lying on the floor. Will and Lyra are seen at a remote location where they light a campfire and sleep side by side, holding hands, wondering about their fate.
