Gutar Gu Review

This short and sweet series, with two sweet teens in the lead, is a heartwarming watch for those who want to think back to their old days and laugh about the small things that they got stressed about. Life has become so stressful for all of us lately that sometimes we forget to look at the small moments of happiness that keep us going.

Gutar Gu is a feel-good and funny show that takes us back to our first love when things were simple, and our biggest issue was the mock test the next day. Ritu and Anuj (played rather honestly by Ashlesha Thakur and Vishesh Bansal) find a budding romance in a tuition centre and try their best to go through the ups and downs of their teenage relationship with simple problems.

Each episode showcases one such issue that they are having that day, and the two of them usually find equally simple solutions, but of course, it’s funny to watch how big these issues are to their teenage selves. It’s funny and interesting because, in retrospect, these are hardly any stressors, but at that age, nothing can be worse!

There’s a certain charm and reliability in the series that keeps you watching with love and warmth; it’s a retelling of our lives that is simple but also so complicated. It’s an age where romance feels like the biggest deal in life, and with career and college also a looming threat in the background, one can’t help but laugh at the sweetness of an age gone by.

Gutar Gu also portrays the differences in Anuj and Ritu’s upbringings. Although both of them are innocent and only look at life through rose-coloured glasses, there is a depth to their characters that describe how they solve issues. It’s an interesting watch because their vastly different backgrounds make them vastly different people, yet they are so similar in morals and thoughts.

The show also brings forth some social issues in fleeting moments. Anuj’s orthodox family remains a thorn in the background for almost all 6 episodes, and in one, they face the wrath of extremists. However, most of their issues stem from friends and family or just their naivety. It’s a breath of fresh air in the midst of the blood and gore that we usually see in OTT shows and will make you rather nostalgic at some points.

The story is also set in a small town, and thus we see its charms and simple pleasures. It’s also what makes the story more believable and realistic. It doesn’t go over any extremes that you see otherwise, which is thankfully a great choice to make.

Final Thoughts

This is a simple story with relatable issues. Along with the innocent performances by the cast and a storyline that might just be any of ours, Gutar Gu is the perfect watch to put a smile on your face. There are moments when this show will make you laugh, be serious or simply just make you nostalgic.

Gutar Gu is streaming on Amazon MiniTV.
