Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Suicide Squad Not Delayed: James Gunn

The coronavirus has brought in its wake the cancellation, postponement and delay of various TV shows and movies. These including highly anticipated movies like Black Widow as well. However, there’s a ray of sunshine in this gloomy weather. James Gunn, with two big movies in his bag, has told fans that there will not be a delay in their release dates. These movies include Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad.

The filmmaker, who was fired and reinstated by Disney, has successfully returned to working on the superhero sequels. However, with the current health crisis and the state of the entertainment industry, fans were worried that the movies would take the route of Mulan or No Time To Die.

In a Twitter Q&A session with fans, Gunn assured fans that the release dates of both the movies are on schedule. Although the quarantine meant that trailers and promotional images will be slow to come, yet editing of The Suicide Squad was going on schedule. The studio is still looking at an August 2021 release. He credited the post-production team and studio for having the necessary foresight to wrap up shooting before the onset of the pandemic.

Considering delays, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen some back push back of movies. The MCU usually has quite a number of movies scheduled one-after-another and pushing back one usually creates a domino effect. Thus, pushing back Black Widow to November 2020 delayed Black Panther 2, The Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder. Along with these, other movies that be affected by the delay are Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange 2 and Captain Marvel 2.

Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after old tweets of his came to light, where he joked about paedophilia and rape. The Marvel bosses, evidently, were not happy with him. He was then brought on to direct The Suicide Squad. Later on, his co-workers wrote a public letter in favour of Gunn, asking him to be reinstated. That happened in 2019.

The firing and subsequently re-hiring pushed back development on the film during which time Warner Bros. hired him for The Suicide Squad. He then agreed to start with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after completing the DC Comics movie.

There’s not much information on the Suicide Squad movie other than it is a standalone sequel of 2016’s Suicide Squad. That movie was riddled with bad critic reviews and people did not enjoy Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker. This time around, cast members include Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Idris Elba, John Cena, Taika Waititi and Nathan Fillion.

Gunn, however, mentioned that although him and the film’s editors are all working from home, the first images or trailer of The Suicide Squad are still not ready.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is yet to get a release date, probably because Disney is still shuffling dates around for the other movies. The cast for the new movie includes Karen Gillan, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
