Great Expectations Episode 3: Pip Aims to Become a Gentleman

Great Expectations Episode 3 circles around Pip’s primary character development, his desperation to become a gentleman and, a new world that isn’t as shiny as it has always looked from the outside. The last episode ended with Miss Havisham’s lawyer, Mr Jaggers looking for Pip and we start off the new one right there.

Jaggers pours a bucket of water over a drunk Pip at the local bar. Pip clearly isn’t happy with the intervention and tries to fight off Jaggers but, it is the latter who gains the upper hand. He explains to Pip why he is there offering a lucrative deal of five thousand pounds if Pip agrees to go with Jaggers at that very moment without questions asked. To sweeten the deal, Jagges also offers Pip a position at his practice. We can see in this episode how influential Jaggers is and, it only makes sense for Miss Havisham to be connected with him.

Pip takes the deal. It almost is like a plea deal and you realize that when Pip finds a note from Estella on his horse asking him not to go with Jaggers. Yes, Jaggers has not been the only one looking for Pip. His old lady love surely needs or wants something from him. However, the heartbroken Pip ignores Estella’s note and sets on the journey with Jaggers from where there is no return.

Great Expectations Episode 3: Final Thoughts

Great Expectations Episode 3 is overall a stepping stone in the storyline because it concretizes a lot of things that have been going on and tries to streamline them into one. Pip’s growth, Estella’s heart and Miss Havisham’s betrayal all form the crux of this episode with extremely well played out performances by each and every actor. It is massive how engagingly the plot is moving forward. It continues to be a period drama with its flair of dramatization of Dickens’ classic but, it is only to aid the viewers to stay more focused and anticipating.
