Set in 1954, before the original 1978 musical rom-com revolving around Danny and Sandy was a thing, Grease Rise of the Pink Ladies introduces a group of ‘fed-up outcasts”. Challenging the existing mould of Rydell High, these eponymous ladies played by Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso and Tricia Fukuhara give fun a new definition. The show has been created by Annabel Oakes and also stars Johnathan Nieves, Jason Schmidt, Maxwell Whittington-Coope and others.
When all the rage surrounded around being a T-bird, a new wave sweeps up the high school that becomes about all those who are “sick of feeling like they’re not welcome” there. If you know what it feels like not being able to fit in with the bigger crowd, then you’ll be able to relate to this tale as well. Owning the colour pink, this isn’t your regular ‘girl gang’, and its members are ready to do some bad to bring in a good change.

Interestingly, the first season of the show is also set to welcome back Jackie Hoffman, who played the role of Principal McGee in the first two films as well. The movies were centred around the same idea of high school cliques and finding one’s identity and sense of belonging with a group of people. Rise of the Pink Ladies, though a spin-off prequel to that, will focus on critiquing these set notions especially since the trailer presents a diverse cast. Questions around one’s gender identity may also be raised along the same line of thought.
However, we can’t say for sure if this series will be a hit or a miss since fanbases have lost interest in watching revivals of titles that previously occupied a classic stance in the mainstream pop culture. With the first reactions coming in after the release of the trailer itself, the reception isn’t looking on the bright side of things at the moment. One can only hope that the episodes reach out further with greater depth, more than what has been served in the first few sneak peeks of the series.
