Game of Thrones Prequel: HBO Considering Series on Aegon Targaryen’s Conquest of Westeros

A new Game of Thrones prequel is said to be in the works at HBO, and this time they are going further back in discovering how the first Aegon Targaryen captured Westeros. Game of Thrones is set 300 years after the events of this story, and House of the Dragon focuses on the lives of the Targaryens a hundred years after this conquest.

What we know of the story of Aegon I is that he and his sister-wives (the inbreeding never dies) use their army and three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros except for Dorne. Which entailed that Aegon I became the first person to sit on the Iron Throne, giving him relentless power over the kingdom. This establishment of unimaginable power becomes the linchpin for Game of Thrones as a series.

It is also rumoured that there may be a feature component to this project, meaning that the studio may first make a feature film before delving into the lives of these characters. There have been many attempts at making an adaptation before, but they have all fallen through. The abandoned pilot starring Naomi Watts, which was about the Long Night, was scrapped in 2019, the same time when House of the Dragon was greenlit.

Game of Thrones follows a few houses in the region, all trying to make their claim to the Iron Throne. They are the House Stark, House Targaryen, House Lannister and many others. These three mentioned before are some of the most powerful houses in Westeros. They are working harder than ever by making deals, betrayals, marriage alliances and political partnerships to take over this symbol of power that most Houses in Westeros could only wish for.

Meanwhile, the newly released House of the Dragon is about the House of Targaryen 200 years before the events of the aforementioned show take place. It looks at the lives of King Viserys Targaryen, Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen as they all scramble for the Iron Throne. The family in-fighting, the alliances out of court and the betrayals happening in the palace are all the events that take the story towards the decline of the House Targaryen.

This world is just one of many looking to expand into the feature film and tv series platform. Like the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Marvel Studios, other production companies are also looking to intertwine their stories from their previously released projects. If HBO and Warner Brothers manage to greenlight a feature film for a Game of Thrones story, they might be one of the few that have managed to do that seamlessly.

Warner Brothers have also started rallying their troops to conduct a similar shift towards a larger story world for the DC Universe under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Other legacy media companies are taking the lessons from Disney’s Marvel projects and trying to expand their own IPs for something interesting and interconnected across projects. These prequels and feature film projects may very well lead to a new kind of universe within the Game of Thrones prequels that would explore many other characters and their backstories.

Till then, catch House of the Dragon on HBO Max. All episodes of Season 1 are currently streaming on the platform. What are you most excited to see in this prequel? Let us know in the comments below.
