Friends The Reunion Review: It’s Not That Common, It Doesn’t Happen To Every Show And It Is A Big Deal!

Friends The Reunion is here, and we can’t keep calm. After 17 years, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow have come together on screen for their fans. The special is unofficially called ‘The Last One’, but Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, Ross and Phoebe are forever engraved in our minds and hearts. The episode duration is more than one and a half hour, almost like a movie. For Indian fans, the special is streaming on Zee5.

Firstly, thank you, Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin S. Bright, for giving us the iconic sitcom Friends. Thank you, Ben Winston, for directing the fantastic Friends The Reunion special. Also, a big thanks to the six main leads who have grown in their careers and lives yet agreed to give some time out of their busy schedule and talk about the sitcom, memories, bonds, only for their millions of fans.

Friends The Reunion Review
Friends The Reunion (still from the trailer)

Friends The Reunion special starts with David Schwimmer entering Rachel-Monica and Chandler-Joey’s apartment sets. He feels surreal, and his reaction is exactly like ours. Then comes Lisa Kudrow, and the duo hug and are happy to see each other. Seeing the two ready and arriving first reminded me of the episode The One Where No One Is Ready where only Ross and Phoebe were all ready for Ross’ big night, but others were. Then enters Jennifer Aniston, who gets emotional, followed by the remaining three. If you are a fan, seeing the six of them together in Monica-Rachel’s apartment and Central Perk in the present day will give you a good cry.

The star cast shares various anecdotes, their memorable episodes, and joke around with each other. If you still have doubt how much of Monica is there in Courteney Cox, give a good look at how she arranges apples on the tables the moment she enters the apartment. The special is presented in a non-linear format – one with the six of them just talking among themselves and the other where James Corden interacts with the cast in front of the famous fountain. So keep your eyes glued to the screen because you don’t want to miss out on anything.

Friends The Reunion
Friends The Reunion Review: Trailer still

Friends Reunion on Zee5 shows us how little we know about the series despite knowing so much. There are different facts and trivia about the actors, characters, and the storyline on the internet. But Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow reveal lots of information that only the six of them were aware of (Crush alert).

James Corden tells the actors that Friends is being watched by more than 100 billion people, and they were astonished. The actors were also shown clips of real-life fans from different countries who share their heartwarming stories of how the show changed their lives. One of the fans in the video says that the actors have no idea how many people they’ve saved with their sitcom, and she is one of them. For some, these six characters were their only amigos for many years in their life.

In the Friends Reunion special, the actors also did their table readings of several iconic scenes. While all of them did a brilliant job, Lisa Kudrow yelling ‘My eyes, my eyes’ still gives you goosebumps and makes you laugh out hard. From sharing what they didn’t like about the series to Matt LeBlanc’s horrific arm dislocation incident to Matthew Perry revealing why sometimes he felt like he’d die, the actors also make shocking revelations.

The celebrity guest stars on Friends The Reunion also add a lot of charm to the episode. Maggie Wheeler and Kit Harington are my favourites from the long list of guest stars who talked about their love for the sitcom. We all erupt in laughter during the ‘Pivot’ sequence, but Harington’s observation of the scene has made me fall more in love with it. The other guest stars who were all praises for the actors and the sitcom are David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, Cara Delevinge, Lady Gaga, Tom Selleck, Reese Witherspoon, Malala Yousafzai and many more.

I won’t give away a lot in my Friends The Reunion review. But believe me, there are many, many extraordinary moments, and I’ve mentioned only a handful of them. Matthew Perry interacted the least in the special episode. Fans were worried about his slurring speech and health ever since the trailer came out. Now, the latest reports reveal that he had undergone an emergency tooth procedure that day. If that’s true, we are relieved. I wish Cole Sprouse (who played Ross’ son Ben) and Paul Rudd (Phoebe’s husband Mike) were also a part of the reunion. That’s always going to bother us.

Friends The Reunion: Is it worth watching?

Do you really want to me tell you again why you should watch the reunion? Well, here it goes – it’s not that common, it doesn’t happen to every show, and it is a BIG deal! They also answer the controversial question – Were Ross and Rachel on a break?

Friends The Reunion is streaming for Indians on Zee5 and on HBO Max for select countries.
