Friends Reunion: Here’s Why Ross-Monica’s The Routine Wasn’t Recreated

Friends: The Reunion, or as the fans call it, Friends Reunion, proved as a huge respite amid the pandemic all over the world. After 17 years, the star cast – Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow came together and got candid about the show and shared many memories.

The Late Late Show with James Corden’s executive producer Ben Winston directed the unscripted special, which received rave reviews worldwide. In the Friends Reunion special, we saw the actors doing table reading of some iconic scenes that were the gamechanger for the sitcom. They also played the popular quiz due to which Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Monica (Courteney Cox) lost their apartments to Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc).

The duration of the special was almost like a movie. Yet, many fans wish to see more. For example, some fans were upset that actors Paul Rudd and Cole Sprouse, who played Phoebe’s husband Mike and Ross’ son Ben respectively, were not a part of the Friends: The Reunion. But this new update is going to drive many fans crazy. Do you remember Ross-Monica’s that bizarre The Routine dance? Well, director Ben Winston wanted Courteney and David to perform The Routine.

In an interaction with The Hollywood Reporter podcast TV’s Top 5, Winston revealed that he asked Courteney Cox and David Schwimmer if they would consider doing The Routine. But the actors refused! Friends Reunion director shares, “I did say, “Would you ever consider doing The Routine?” And both of them were like, “Oh, please don’t make us do that.” There were certain things I really cared for, like the table read or the quiz. I also couldn’t work out where it would have worked. I’m not sure it would have landed 20 years later. But it was definitely on my list of ideas that I pitched.”

But you don’t have to be upset because Courteney Cox treated fans with The Routine performance on her Instagram page recently. Instead of David Schwimmer, she performed it will singer Ed Sheeran, and it will leave you in splits. Ben Winston was also asked what made him add the table reading session of the six actors. He revealed that it was Schwimmer’s idea, especially to do Ross and Rachel’s first kiss table reading session.

“I knew that I wanted to do a Ross and Rachel section. So Schwimmer said, ‘You should get us to read the Ross and Rachel scene. That’d be a really cool thing to read.’ David offered loads of brilliant ideas throughout this process,” shared the Friends Reunion director.
