Friends’ James Michael Tyler aka Gunther Passes Away

Friends actor James Michael Tyler has passed away at the age of 59. The actor played Gunter in the hit 90s sitcom and became a fan favourite. The actor passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning. His manager and wife confirmed the same.

In 2018, James was battling prostate cancer which had spread to his bones. In an official statement, the actor’s manager said, “Tyler passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning. “If you met him once, you made a friend for life. [He] is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno, the love of his life. Wanting to help as many people as possible, he bravely shared his story and became a campaigner for those with a prostate to get a blood test as early as 40-years-old.”

James Michael Tyler’s demise has come as a heartbreak to many who loved his work. The official social media accounts of Friends paid respects to everyone’s favourite Gunther. “Warner Bros. Television mourns the loss of James Michael Tyler, a beloved actor and integral part of our FRIENDS family. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and fans. ❤️☕️,” read the caption.

Actor Maggie Wheeler, who played Janice on the show commented, “o Grateful to have know this kind and gentle man. James Michael Tyler will be dearly missed. My thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, the actor had missed Friends Reunion earlier this year. However, he made an appearance via Zoom to interact with the cast. About not appearing in person for the reunion, James told Today, “It was bittersweet, honestly. I was very happy to be included. It was my decision not to be a part of that physically and make an appearance on Zoom, basically, because I didn’t wanna bring a downer on it, you know? … I didn’t want to be like, ‘Oh, and by the way, Gunther has cancer.”

May his soul rest in peace.
