Netflix’s Don’t Look Up seems to resonate with fans, if not the critics. The black comedy, climate change satire is written, directed and produced by NBC’s Saturday Night Live’s head writer Adam McKay. The movie has an ensemble cast that is headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence along with Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep and several others. Being a little over two hours long, the film shows how two low-level scientists discover that an incoming comet can destroy the planet and set out on a journey to warn the indifferent and ignorant populace.

The film is unique in its storytelling with hilarious but, hard-hitting jokes on America’s political structure, the Gen-Z generation, social media and various other aspects. Borat, which is fully known as Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is a black comedy mockumentary by Larry Charles. Sacha Baron Cohen stars as the titular character in the role of a fictional Kazakhstani journalist. Through this movie, we get to see how Americans interact with a foreigner (our protagonist here) who is not privy to their culture and customs making for a hilarious film. The 2019 Oscar-winning film Parasite is a black comedy thriller from South Korea by director Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won. The film comments on the class hierarchy, the difference in perspective between a rich and a poor man, the air of ignorance installed in rich people and various other topics. The film stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, and Lee Jung-eun. You can watch it now on Amazon Prime Video.


The only science fiction on the list, Avatar is the project by James Cameron which is directed, written, produced, and co-edited by the man himself. The film is a beautiful piece that formulates a perfect plot to show the inhuman tendencies of people against nature and nature-loving. With a climate change theme centring it, the film stars Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Zoe Saldana, CCH Pounder and Joel David Moore.
