Oscars 2022 aka the 94th Academy Awards was a host to celebrate some of the classic pieces of cinema over the decades. The award ceremony held on March 28, 2022, honoured films, cast and crew for their tireless efforts put in creating the best of the lot. Amidst this, the year of nostalgia was ignited and films like The Godfather and others were remembered.
Director Francis Ford Coppola and stars De Niro and Al Pacino celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic film ‘The Godfather’ at the event under the theme ‘Movie lovers unite’ at the Dolby Theatre here. The three walked up to the stage on the theme song of ‘The Godfather’. The director was seen making a speech about ‘The Godfather’, while De Niro and Pacino were standing silently beside him.
‘The Godfather’ tribute was introduced by rapper Puff Daddy. It is a 1972 American crime film based on Mario Puzo’s best-selling 1969 novel of the same name. The film also stars Marlon Brando among many others.
It is the first instalment in ‘The Godfather’ trilogy. The story, spanning from 1945 to 1955, chronicles the Corleone family under patriarch Vito Corleone (Brando), focusing on the transformation of his youngest son, Michael Corleone (Pacino), from a reluctant family outsider to a ruthless mafia boss.

The 94th Academy Award also celebrated 60 years of James Bond’ films and honoured all the stars, who performed the suave spy 007. A video montage of all the James Bond films, including Daniel Craig’s ‘No Time To Die’ was shown with the background score of ‘Live and Let Die’ was showcased at the coveted celebration.
Athletes Kelly Slater, Shaun White and Tony Hawk took centre stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. While talking about the films, White said: Of course, over the years, we’ve all had our favourite Bonds.” Hawk added: “Some people are Sean Connery fans, others Roger Moore. “Or Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig,” Slater shared. White continued: “As great as they all are, it’s impossible to ever be certain that just one star was clearly the GOAT (Greatest Of All-Time).”
When Hawk disagreed with that sentiment by saying, “Really, dude?” White asked as the crowd broke up into laughter. More giggles followed when Hawk said he intended to say Slater and White are “the best in their sports”. “At least, you used to be,” Hawk said.
Late stars Sidney Poitier, Betty White and Ivan Reitman received emotional tributes at the Oscars. On Sunday night, Tyler Perry paid homage to Poitier before the opening of the annual In Memoriam segment.

“He was the first, and for far too long, the only Black man to win an Oscar for best actor,” Perry said of Poitier, who made history with his win in 1964, “When he stood on that stage, he did more than shatter a barrier. He stood there for all that came before him and sparked the dreams of all who followed. To quote Mr. Poitier himself, ‘As the cats say in my area, I’m out there waiting for us all’. I would not be here today without Sidney. All of us are so blessed and honored to have been inspired by him. To you, sir, with all of our love,” reports ‘Variety’.
Poitier died on January 7 at 94. His legendary filmography includes ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’, ‘In the Heat of the Night’, ‘The Defiant Ones’, ‘To Sir, With Love’ and ‘Paris Blues’ to name a few.
Bill Murray then appeared on stage to honour Reitman, who died on February 13. “When Ivan Reitman was 10 years old, his parents gave him a sleeping pill and put him in the deck of a boat to escape Czechoslovakia. He made some pretty good movies, he married a girl, they raised some children and they make movies too. Ivan, I love your work,” he said, as the audience broke into applause.
Jamie Lee Curtis, with a puppy in hand, then celebrated the TV legend and trailblazing animal rights activist White, who died on December 31, 2021, at the age of 99.
“She was not only a Golden Girl, but she was also a legend who brightened every room she walked in and brought a smile to the faces of all who watched her on the screen. And day in and day out, for almost a century, she was a woman who cared so much for not just her two-legged friends, but for animals just like this, “So the greatest gift you could give Betty White is to open your heart and your home and adopt a rescue dog, just like Archie. Just Mike Mac and Cheese from Paw Works. Thank you, Betty, for being a friend to us all,” she said.
White and Curtis starred together in the 2010 rom-com ‘You Again’, along with Kristen Bell and Sigourney Weaver.
