Euphoria Season 2 Episode 6 Recap Contains Spoilers

Euphoria Season 2 Episode 6 captures mothers, parenting and, relationship cores in the life of our characters. The episode opens with Zendaya’s Rue trying to reach a piece of chocolate but, unable to get to even open the wrapper as her withdrawal weakens her. We are told about the aftermath of the previous episode has led Rue to finally consider rehab and, we see Leslie help her and support her through it. But, it is not until we see Rue apologize to Ali that we realize that our protagonist has truly hit rock bottom.

With the re-entry of Ali into the life of the Bennett girls, we finally see Gia get her screen time and attention. In the last season and, even for the past episodes of this one, we have only witnessed Gia lurking in the shadows by being the only sail in her mother’s ship keeping Rue’s boat afloat. However, it is rare when we get to actually reflect on the different sets of trauma Gia is going through watching her mother and sister fall apart. Ali is a blessing in this episode where he finally says loud to Leslie what we all have been wondering- “Let Rue by Rue and, shower the little one with love. She’s been waiting on it.”

With a family dinner taking place at Rue’s house, there are other houses that haven’t been doing so well. Cassie is a mess after the big reveal in the last episode and, we see her act out, a little too much in this one. She keeps calling Nate but, there is never a reply. And, with her state deteriorating as her sister, Lexi and mother call her out for going behind Maddy’s back, we watch Cassie completely lose it at times. Looking at how her house has been functioning, Lexi double thinks about putting up the play.

She reaches out to Fezco to share what she is feeling, giving fans the much desired ‘Fexi’ scenes everyone has been holding their breath on. We watch Lexi and Fez talk, have a movie night with Stand by Me on the screen and, even moments of reaching out for each others’ hands. But as this sweet feeling of affection settles in our duo’s relationship, there are others that need to let the bitterness in theirs go.

Kat tries to break up with Ethan in this episode and, even goes to the heights of lying to him that she suffers from a terminal brain disease that has shortened her time. Ethan, of course, can look past Kat’s fabrications and, we see him truly hurt and agitated. However, where these two ends still remains a mystery as the camera shifts to the most developed character in the season- Maddy.

We see Maddy secluding herself from people. She is angry enough to confess to Kat that she actually wanna orchestrate a gruesome murder with Cassie as the victim. But, all of Maddy’s vicious words are just mere words and, we see her later confide in Theo’s mother over few glasses of wine about what has been going on in her life. We see, Theo’s mother opens up about her past and, how she had been both a ‘Cassie’ and a ‘Maddy’ during her early years until she found Sebastian, her husband.

Maddy reflects on their discussions and, we see her come home where Nate sits with a gun pointing at her. In Euphoria Season 2 Episode 6, we get to see the light and dark balance beautifully in Nate’s personality. After Cal’s departure, his mother feels happy and free and, so does he. But, to truly break free from all the toxicity in his life, he needs to get the sex tape on Cal and Jules from Maddy to go ahead in his life fearlessly, which is what brings him to Maddy’s couch with a gun. After an intense and, absolutely mentally harrowing encounter between this era Bonnie and Clyde, Nate obtains the CD.

But, it isn’t until we see him handing over the tape to Jules as means to protect her, do we realize how twisted, grey and yet, only human Nate is. Throughout this episode, we do not exactly know what is up with Jules and, if Elliot is still in the scene. But, by the end, with Nate’s kind words and, finally feeling like she is less threatened with the CD in her court, we see Jules watch the sex tape, cold and shocked.

Nonetheless, a warm blanket of love does cover a few other relationships, whereas the rest is left stale and cold. By the end of Euphoria Season 2 Episode 6, we see Cassie leave her house and, go to stay with Nate- this vouchers two polarizing reactions from the parents. Cassie’s mother is devasted, whereas we see Nate’s mother finally happy to see his son pick Cassie over Maddy. Gia curls up in Rue’s bed and, we see both the sisters coming on their own terms with each other, with fewer dialogues and just a touch of the new dawn’s sunlight. But, it is Maddy who is left alone in her bed, crying, slipping away from light.

The episode ends with Leslie getting a call from the rehab that lets her know that they won’t be able to take in Rue but, only be able to provide her with detox, breaking the mother who we have always seen hold it together.

Euphoria Season 2 Episode 6: Final Thoughts

Overall, this episode of Euphoria puts the show more on track which left as it had derailed with episode 4. We don’t only get to see our characters more closely and, minutely, we also get their relationship dynamics with their mothers and, how it shapes/shaped them. The Maddy-Nate-Cassie craziness finally finds a closure, which promotes us to look forward to where it goes without the drama. New relationships grow in the humbleness of yellow warmth between Fex and Lexi and, old ones break in the cold cafe between Kat and Ethan.

The episode is now streaming on HBO Max as well as Disney+ Hotstar.
