Emergency NYC Highlights Gun Violence Being Most Dangerous Threat to Children

Emergency NYC is a medical docuseries that follows New York health workers and first responders. The series premiered on March 29, 2023, on Netflix. From the makers of Lenox Hill, Israeli filmmakers Ruthie Shatz and Adi Barash have yet again brought to us a handful of gripping stories from the distressing world of the medical field.

The show consists of a total of eight episodes with a runtime of 40-45 minutes each.

Many unusual cases were showcased throughout the docuseries. Each episode introduced new victims and patients in need of immediate medical assistance. While some cases were about chronic diseases that patients had been dealing with for a long time. A 30-year-old man suffering from cancer finally had his malignant tumour removed that formed at the back of his cranium. Meanwhile, some patients lost their kidney functions and looking for a transplant. The cases became more personal after patients’ life stories were shared.

However, even though there were many diseases that were affecting the lives of many adolescents to young children, gun violence remained the most dangerous threat. In the first episode, a student was admitted instantly following a vicious incident. The 17-year-old was a victim of gun violence and was gravely injured by the gunshot. Accompanied by his mother, the student remained unconscious and fought bravely in the emergency room for his life.

With much effort, the doctors were able to drag him from the brink of death. Joshua was brought to Cohen Children’s Medical Center after he got into a fight at school and was shot. His case was handled by Dr Prince, who attended to him day and night to ensure his survival. The doctor was also seen empathising with the victim’s mother and reassuring her of his well-being. Even though he was out of imminent danger, the road to recovery was tough and long.

Paediatrician and trauma surgeon Chetan Sathya talks extensively about how gun violence is affecting children in the United States of America. He mildly criticises the government for not implementing more gun violence prevention laws. The day President Biden visited New York to meet the Mayor and discuss the issue, two students were shot and admitted to the hospital. The doctor additionally talks about how frequently children are admitted to the hospital due to gun violence and how it is increasingly becoming a common issue.

He goes on to interview a victim and understand his perspective of the situation. The young boy looked visibly shocked by the traumatic incident. He mentions how he had not anticipated a situation of that measure to happen to him. Furthermore, he explains the instance in detail. He was shot so suddenly that he felt the pain of being shot much later as adrenaline to hide had clouded his mind.

Natasha Christopher, an activist who lost her son to gun violence, speaks about the issue. She is seen heading a press conference where she urges the people to act quickly before another child becomes a victim of the gruesome crime. U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries also appears and addresses the issue that has been affecting the citizens. Dr Jose also joins in advocating gun control and prevention laws. Gun violence is currently the number one cause of children’s death in the U.S.A. Speedy action is required by the government to put an end to this horrifying crime.
