Doll House (2022) is a Netflix Filipino movie that stars Baron Geisler as Rustin, Althea Ruedas as Yumi, Phi Palmos as Bok and Izah Hankammer as teenage Yumi. It is directed by Marla Ancheta, and the story is by Onay Sales. The runtime is of 106 minutes.
The synopsis reads, “A troubled lead singer of a rock band sets out to rekindle the relationship he never had with his long-lost daughter.”

In Doll House, Rustin is one of the singers in a local band and a drug addict. It is due to addiction, Rustin’s marriage ends. Years ago, he abandoned his wife Sheena and baby girl Yumi. Years later, due to some reason, Rustin decides to visit his daughter, who’s around 6-7 years old.
Rustin learns that his wife Sheena remarried but unfortunately, she and her husband died in an accident. Yumi now leaves with her uncle, Bok, who never met Rustin before. Rustin babysits Yumi without revealing his real identity. Will Yumi know that he’s her birth father? Will the father-daughter reunite in the true sense? Will Yumi accept him?
The genre of the absent father is something that’s often explored. However, most stories manage to leave us feeling emotional. Netflix movie Doll House (2022) also has some endearing moments between Rustin and Yumi. He never tells her that he’s her father. She calls him Uncle. But they bond so quickly that people address them as father-daughter.

When Rustin starts babysitting Yumi, the movie becomes engaging. From playing together to taking singing lessons, the duo leave us with a big smile. However, when his identity is revealed (as it should), the twist in the climax isn’t what we expect.
Doll House has a weak third act and takes away every sentiment we felt while watching the father-daughter duo together. The makers tried to create an emotional impact with that twist. They ruined the growth we saw in Rustin as a person.
I was so invested in young Yumi’s fondness towards Rustin that I wanted to see her reaction when she learned the truth. But the makers didn’t let that happen.
Actor Baron Geisler’s Rustin is not easily likeable because of his drug addiction and reckless behaviour. However, Baron wins you with his wonderful performance when he babysits and spends time with Yumi.
The true star of the movie is Althea Ruedas as Yumi. The child actor is adorable in every scene, whether she’s talking or singing. Actor Phi Palmos as, Yumi’s uncle, also plays his part well.
Doll House Review: Final Thoughts
Overall, Doll House movie on Netflix is heartfelt and bittersweet, especially when the father-daughter scenes take over. I wish the climax wasn’t so underwhelming and disengaging. Otherwise, it’s a good movie for someone who wants to watch something heartwarming.

Depending on the viewer’s judgment, but for me the story plot was realistic and presents hope for the father and daughter. After all they are best friends. Excellent acting by everyone. Highly recommended.
