Bye-bye Fox: Disney Rebrands Its Acquired Studio as 20th Century Studios

Last year, Disney made headlines with the purchase of 20th Century Fox studio and film divisions. With the completion of a year of the merger, Disney is now looking to phase out the old branding entirely from its newly acquired assets – the 20th Century Fox film studios will become 20th Century Studios while Fox Searchlight Pictures is scheduled to become Searchlight Pictures.

Apparently, removing the ‘Fox’ tagline would make things cleaner for the entertainment world, considering its political inclinations do not suit Disney’s politically neutral approach. The move also suits the fact that Fox Corporation still exists and runs things like Fox News, Fox Sports, and Fox TV. The rebranding will detach Disney from Fox completely.

It is also to note here that Disney now owns a huge share of movies that were previously associated with the old studio. So, fans will now consume movies like Alien, Predator, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Die Hard, Planet of the Apes, and, yes, even Star Wars under the Disney banner. Furthermore, it makes sense from a business perspective. The company wants viewers to associate movie biggies as a Disney movie from the get-go, for those of us who have become accustomed to seeing Fox’s logo at their heads. It is also a way for Disney to lay claim to its ever-expanding and gigantic back catalog of film titles.

However, all is not changing. The historic 20th Century Fox fanfare opening will still remain as is, albeit without the Fox tagline.

The new names are reportedly going to roll out soon. Downhill, Searchlight’s new movie, will feature the updated logo with the Searchlight Pictures Studios label. On the other hand, Call of the Wild (February 21) will feature the new 20th Century Studios logo.

Disney, however, is still debating whether or not to change the names of TV production studios, 20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 Television Studios. They are less visible to consumers that the film branding, and thus less distracting for viewers.

As an afterthought though, Deadpool and Wolverine are now, technically, Disney princesses. And I don’t know if I’m ready for that reality check.
