Dexter: New Blood Episode 5 Review: Good Daddy, Bad Son?

Dexter: New Blood Episode 5 ‘Runaway’ is now out. Directed by Marcos Siega, the episode is written by Veronica West. The episode stars Michael C Hall, Jack Alcott, Julia Jones, Johnny Sequoyah, Alano Miller, Jennifer Carpenter, Clancy Brown and Jamie Chung. The latest episode is of at least 53 minutes. The review is more of an episodic recap with spoilers.

The synopsis for today’s episode reads, “Harrison goes to a party with his friends and ends up consuming some questionable pills that mess with his mind and lead to an accident. Will Dexter pay a visit the person who gave Harrison the drugs?”

Dexter: New Blood Episode 5 Review Contains Spoilers

In Dexter: New Blood Episode 5 ‘Runaway’, Dexter Morgan tries to get the truth out of Harrison. He wants to be a “good father” and wants his son to feel accepted with his dark side. However, Harrison (Jack Alcott) loses his calm. He points out the irony of how his father is lying to people with his fake ‘Jim’ identity.

Harrison storms out of the house while someone advises Dexter to start therapy for his son. Angela and Molly find clues about Matt Caldwell and head together outside Iron Lake. Kurt Caldwell locks another girl inside the creepy house, and it turns out he isn’t a paedophile. We’re still unsure of why he locks young girls inside the house.

The high school students arrange a party for Harrison where he consumes drugs. The drugs make him unconscious, and Audrey immediately calls 911. Harrison gets admitted to the hospital due to the severe effects of drugs. Sergeant Logan informs Dexter about the main suppliers of the poisonous pills. Yet again, Dexter attempts to be a “good father” and decides to get into the serial killer mood to punish the drugs suppliers. Logan is also on the lookout for them. So killing at Iron Lake will not be easy for Dexter like it was in Miami.

On the other hand, it seems like Kurt has found his new young target in Harrison. He not only gives him free dinner but also offers him a job. On the other hand, Angela meets someone from Dexter Morgan’s past at a police conference. That was an unexpected and huge twist in an episode that’s already so staggering.

  1. I thought episode 5 was a step backwards, relying on several coincidences intersecting somehow at the same point… broke the immersion for me. Cartoonishly contrived. i struggle to give it a 3/5, which is sad, because episodes 1-4 have been brilliant.
But ask, if none of those contrived coincidences occur in this one episode, what really happens? lol Relying on several coincidences intersecting is a sign of poor writing. And this episode is almost NOTHING without them. Fabricated tension that doesnt even really deliver, again, probably due to the unrealistic, immersion breaking coincidence party.

    • Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I believe the episode was brilliant like the previous ones. It’s a show, and opinions differ. I hope you like the rest of the episodes. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. New Blood is a path for the new millennial audience, I get it, a plan to pass the torch and continue the Dexter franchise; but to watch these kids acting and โ€œtalkingโ€ is almost feels like a fork scraping in my eyes and ears. They just blew it with these actors in training. We miss the suspense and pleasure of being a vigilante with the previous cast members. Blah!

    • Thanks for sharing your views. New place, new people. There will be some differences. I hope the show impresses you further. ๐Ÿ˜€
