Castlevania Nocturne Review: Transcending Expectations With Moral Dilemmas and Visual Splendor

Castlevania Nocturne Review: Castlevania Nocturne, a dark fantasy animated series based on the video game series of the same name by Korami, was released on September 28, 2023. Created and written by Clive Bradley and led by producer Kevin Kolde for Netflix, the series is a spin-off of the Castlevania animated series. The series stars Edward Bluemel as Richter Belmont, Pixie Davies as Maria Renard, Thuso Mbedu as Annette, Franka Potente as Erzsebet Báthory and others.

Powerhouse Animation Studios is the primary animator of the show, and Sam Deats and Adam Deats are directing under it. Kevin Kolde and Clive Bradley will serve as front-runners and executive producers under the banner of Project 51 Productions. The show will consist of a total of 8 episodes with a runtime of approximately 20-25 minutes. The episodes are shot in English and subtitles will be available.

The plot of the series is adapted from the 1993 entry Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and its sequel Symphony of the Night. It centres on Richter Belmont, a member of the Belmont family, and is set in 1792, at the height of the French Revolution. Richer Belmont, who is a descendant of the Belmont vampire-hunting clan, has to make a tough choice. To prevent the world from an apocalypse, he must join a group of unlikely hunters and magicians during the peak of the French Revolution.

The series has a reputation for immense plot building that leaves the audience satisfied. And it is safe to say that the series has lived up to its name this time around as well. Someone who is unfamiliar with the show will not find it difficult to follow the plot, as it serves as an introductory one and provides a clear description of all the important characters.

Initially, the story starts as a typical one, showcasing the hero going through a traumatic childhood event that shaped his life. However, as the plot progresses, there are multiple unpredictable and equally exciting which add depth and nuance to the story. Moreover, the plot contains thought-provoking themes of death, loss, justice, and chosen family which often brings us to view situations in a different light. As the story unfolds, very often the paths of the hero and villain intersect, blurring the line between good and evil.

However, a few defining moments of the series that should carry more weight often fall short heavily in moving us. The scenes involving when the hero finally realises his purpose, fuelled by emotions and passion to push through and do the right thing, do not quite touch the audience in the way that they should. Partly the blame goes to the pace and lack of heavy-hitting dialogues that enhance such moments. Nevertheless, the music plays a huge role in elevating and adding an extra flair to the climatic sequences.

The animation of the series is another aspect that definitely stands out the most. The use of long shots to capture the wide view of the magnificent landscapes, emmerses the viewers entirely. Moreover, the battle sequences are the heart of the series and the creators do not shy away from going full out. The use of dynamic camera angles, close-ups, and sweeping shots adds depth and drama to the sequences. Although a few particular scenes do appear to remain unnatural and throw off the flow of the story but the meticulous visuals makes up for the drawbacks.

Another aspect of the story that needs to be mentioned is the varied characters in the show. Each character has a unique story to tell and comes from a different background. The complexity of their thought process and conflicting ideologies often cause clashes among them or sometimes bring them together. The continuous tension fuels the series, keeping the audience captivated throughout.

The classic story about humans versus vampires takes an interesting turn with an added twist. It has everything, a hero with a traumatic past, unwavering allies, the ultimate nemesis and the final evil boss. Along with straightforward characters to morally grey ones, the story pushes the boundaries of morality constantly and significantly. Moreover, the alluring battle sequences along with the intricate character design will manage to keep you hooked throughout.
