Caramelo Review
A moving drama film focusing on a dog saving a human being from himself is one that will never not be a hit and one that will move you to tears regardless of how strong you think you are. Netflix’s Caramelo is a warm, somewhat obvious film with a lot of heart and one that will ease into your heart thanks mostly to the goodest boy who plays the lead role!
The film follows Caramelo, a street pup, who finds his way into a chef’s life and changes it for the better. The chef in question, Pedro, finds success in his professional life, overcomes a serious disease because his new pet catches it quickly and then helps him meet his wife because that’s just what dogs do. I don’t care whether that’s a realistic set of things that happens when it comes to pet dogs; I am totally on board, mostly because the dog, played by sweet puppy Amendoim, has so much soul in his eyes that it’s impossible not to believe his intentions!
Caramelo is a fun, emotional and light-hearted film that is not too heavy. It has a lot of heart, and the chemistry between Pedro and Caramelo is one to die for. The principal characters do a fantastic job of bringing their ups and downs to the viewers in a believable way, and you yearn for the two to be reunited against all obstacles and odds. The film is told with a lot of compassion, and its lighthearted nature will keep everyone hopeful and happy. Thankfully, the happy ending helps, too.
I enjoyed watching Rafael Vitti in the film, and he’s a very sweet and compassionate protagonist to follow. However, the film is, like its name, completely dependent on Amendoim’s fantastic performance and personality, which he shows a ton of. He’s fun and energetic, but also oddly tender. You’d expect these compliments to go towards a human being, but, to no one’s surprise, it’s the sweet puppy who outshines everyone.
However, it has to be said that the story isn’t very fresh. Of course, we have seen variations of this film in different ways, but it’s the way the story is presented that leaves an impression. Films about terminal illnesses are dime a dozen, but there’s a refreshing amount of hope in this film that keeps you going. While Pedro, understandably, is devastated, you never feel dishearted and hope that things will get better because of the support system he has surrounding him. The film, although emotional, will leave you with happy thoughts despite everything.
Final Thoughts
Caramelo is a very entertaining film that has its heart in the right place. It’s enjoyable, but that’s mostly because of the goodest good boy! Is it the best movie out there? Probably not. But it’s a satisfying watch for the weekend that will put a smile on your face… and make you want to get a dog immediately.
