Arifureta Season 2 Episode 5 Review- Can we get something fresh?

Arifureta Season 2 Episode 5 Shield

Every week, you get serenaded with the same promise of “you know what you got into when you sat down to watch an episode of Arifureta”. Like the show, this schtick gets old quickly and ages like milk. Yes, while the statement is technically correct (the best and worst kind of correct), it doesn’t mean that we can’t ask more from a show that has the potential to be good yet somehow lets quality slip away from it every single time. If only it were the same show that got scrapped before being replaced by the monstrosity that was Season 1.

Week after week, it’s the same old story. Hajime and his harem will defeat a dungeon, collect the spoils, and make some sexual jokes along the way. This cycle then repeats about 4 more times, and then a season ends. The entire first season was full of nothing but this, and as we are already in our second dungeon by Episode 5 of the second season. The show has been in the same holding pattern for the duration of its entire existence now, and it is getting tiring.

Yue Arifureta Season 2 Episode 5

This factor would have been much easier to digest if our hero party wasn’t this overpowered avenger squad consisting of a literal dragon, a magic-using vampire, and a hero whose powers are literally that he can make anything into anything. There is no challenge to any of their adventures. There is no danger or uncertainty around these parts. You know that once the characters leave, they aren’t coming back before destroying every opponent in their way without even breaking a sweat.

Thus, all the conflict in the show rests upon these overpowered characters bickering among themselves, which itself might just be the most annoying part of the entire show. They don’t have a lot of chemistry with each other and come across as “along for the ride” instead of “Happy to be here”. The show also keeps increasing the size of the group for some reason, last adding Kaori, who might have just been the most pointless addition this far.

You might have noticed that there wasn’t much about this particular episode in this Arifureta Season 2 Episode 5 Review. There’s a reason for that, and it’s because nothing worth discussing happened in this episode. It was the same old dungeon, some old wife conflicts, and the same old threat to the lives of Hajime’s classmates, whom we never cared about. There is an overarching plot for this series, as there always is. It’s just that this one isn’t particularly interesting or captivating. Overall, the more that’s revealed about this new season, the less there is to care about.

Verdict

You have seen Arifureta Season 2 Episode 5 14 times before. You just didn’t know the first time you saw it that you would be watching the same thing for two seasons. This is as generic as anime can get.
