Aoashi Review – Overwhelming Importance Of Will!

The final game of the youth club selection is in full play. And just like promised by the Tokyo City Esperion FC Youth’s coach-cum-manager Fukuda in the previous episode, an announcement was made at some point between the game. With the tough and even brutal opponent, the aspiring players are having a difficult time. The announcement should have lifted their spirits. Though that is not what happens. It said that the players they are having such a hard time with, are playing off their usual positions. Feels like a punch in the gut, right?

Aoashi Episode 4 starts by showing the players after they have received this drastic announcement. Before the announcement, they knew how big of a gap existed between them and the opponent team. But at least, they were trying to give a fight. Even when Akutsu deliberately tried to agitate Aoi and even pushed him intentionally, Aoi had not given up on the game. But the announcement seems like a death sentence. Players fall on their knees, and the onlookers can just sympathize with their plight.

What could one do in a similar situation? This episode of Aoashi shows the mental toll games can take on a player. They can be the best from where they come from. An outstanding athlete, the best amongst where they grew up. But what happens as they move up the charts and have to face others of similar backgrounds. What makes them work hard with perseverance and not lose their will? How do they keep on playing despite the immense difference in skills against their formidable opponent?

Accompanied by great flow and storyline buildup, Ao Ashi builds upon the character of the main cast. Their personalities, their aspirations, and their reasonings are well-conveyed in this episode of the soccer anime. Rather than just focusing on just the game or even the scoreboard, Ao Ashi Episode 4 cornerstones on Aoi’s ability to read the court. The pacing is tuned perfectly for such an early-stage game. The bird’s eye view slows down the game and gives a chance to catch on to the viewers.

The second half of the Aoashi Episode 4 perfectly balanced out the pressure and nervousness built up from the beginning of this football anime. The opening theme song fits in with the series now more than ever, showcasing the amazing work of Masaru Yokoyama. He was also involved in their grand projects such as Fruits Basket, Your Lie In April, and Horimiya. Animation does lack a bit at certain times, but it does not ruin immersion in the game at all.
