Amazon’s Mirzapur 2 Review: Not the Same Flames as S1 But Enough to Keep You Engaged

Mirzapur 2, scheduled to premiere on 23rd October 2020, was released a day earlier on 22nd October 2020 much to fans’ surprise. Directed by Karan Anshuman and Gurmmet Singh, the series stars Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu Sharma, Ali Fazal, Sheeba Chadha, Shweta Tripathi, Vijay Varma, Rasika Dugal, Harshita Gaur, Anil George, Shaji Chaudhary, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda alongside other cast members.

Amazon Prime Video cleverly kept viewers waiting for Mirzapur 2 for 2 long years. The series never went out of trend as the last season ended with something nobody could have possibly asked for – Dimpy (Shriya Pilgaonkar) and Bablu’s (Vikrant Massey) death at the hands of Munna, while Guddu, Golu, and Dimpy managed to make their way out of that massacre and horror.

Physically and mentally injured, Golu and Guddu seek revenge from the Tripathi family this season and again there are a lot of murders at hand and truckloads of abuses! Well, everything’s fair in the fictional Mirzapur, other than the fact that recently a Mirzapur MP demanded action against the series claiming that it maligns the UP city!

Picking up where it left off, Mirzapur 2 is not exactly the bang-on show the viewers wanted and waited to see for 2 long years. Season 1 of the series was fresh and raw while the second season refined and toned itself down a bit. After Bablu’s tragic end the series seems to have lost its mind because not even once does Guddu make a radical decision in S2. However, that does not stop Ali Fazal from being one of the driving forces of the series and being absolutely flawless.

Mirzapur 2 Review

While S1 was more about men in power, we see a powerful transition in Mirzapur 2 – women in power. Leading the way and full of vengeance are the women of Mirzapur who will stop at nothing to see justice for themselves and others. Noteworthy in that list is Beena who will exact revenge against Babuji (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), who forced her into an unfortunate situation. Other than her, another character that flourishes in S2 is Munna’s wife Madhuri (Isha Talwar), who proves to be a strong character. With Mirzapur being a male-driven show, the growth of women works out well for the series’ progress this season.

The season does not lack drama and has enough story base and character line that it manages to keep its viewers hooked till the very end. We see an angry and injured Guddu who wants nothing but revenge and blood is like cocaine to him. Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) is one of the major factors that will keep you engaged and this has not changed since S1. The series is embedded with blood and gore and no matter where you go there is no escaping it.

Mirzapur 2 Review
Shweta Tripathi and Ali Fazal in Mirzapur Season 2.

Even with a storyline that does not exactly match up to the Season 1 vibe, what keeps the screenplay together is the glorious and extremely talented cast of Mirzapur 2.

Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya is a character to remember. His character speaks volumes and raises storms by not even saying much and there is no denying his adroitness! Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit is stronger and fiercer this season and comes up as the King of Mirzapur. After Bablu’s tragic demise, the beast within Guddu that was held by Bablu’s logic is unleashed and the screenplay is amazing and unforgettable.

Divyendu Sharma as Phoolchand Tripathi aka Munna Bhaiya is not the same as before. Though still strong and merciless, his character sees an emotional dip this season which works out well for the storyline but isn’t exactly the Munna Bhaiya we saw in S1 who found his strength in his friends. Sharma as Munna Bhaiya, even with the dips and turns, is praise-worthy.

Rasika Dugal as Beena Tripathi, a victim to Babuji’s perverted acts, is stronger than before this season and would destroy the Tripathis if she has to. All the while suffering and growing courageous, Rasika Duggal roots her character into the Indian household and anger with perfection.

Mirzapur 2 Review

Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Satyanand Tripathi, Kaleen Bhaiya’s perverted father, is an important chain in the storyline and twist in Mirzapur 2. While his character was mostly in the background in S1, here we see him as a cruel and perverted man.

Shaji Chaudhary as Maqbool Khan is one of the strongest characters in Mirzapur 2. His character, who would die for Kaleen Bhaiya, turns against him this season and it, obviously, gets bloody. His character is a man of few words and more action, and Shaji does the job very well.

Shweta Tripathi as Gajgamini Gupta aka Golu is no longer the girl you saw in S1 – she is no longer scared and mild in her ways. After what Munna did to her sister and her possible love interest, she, along with Guddu, seek revenge. Her character has despair in her eyes and no matter how strong it may look on the outside, you see the fire brewing and growing within each day.

Vijay Varma as Bharat Tyagi and Shatrughan Tyagi, twin brothers who are a new addition to the season are roles worth watching. While one is driven by his heart, another is driven by his mind and logic and these twins are not the same in anything else other than their looks. Varma brings the characters on the screen in such a way that the acting and characterization do not collide with each other and allows the audience to form an opinion for both the brothers with ease!

Mirzapur 2 Review

STREAM IT! Mirzapur 2 is a gift for fans who waited for 2 years and kept the trend alive. While the series does not hold the same intrigue as before, it is definitely worth watching for its par-excellence cast. Some episodes are extensive and therefore, more predictable and tiresome but the ending is a sign for Mirzapur 3. Now that Guddu has claimed the throne of Mirzapur and Munna is incapable of doing so and Kaleen Bhaiya has escaped alive, what will the Tripathi kin do?

Mirzapur 2 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
