A Merry Little Ex-Mas Review
With the advent of November, Christmas rom-coms are back in action, and the first one of this holiday season is A Merry Little Ex-Mas, which showcases the trials and tribulations of the holiday season as a family struggles to find a new normal. As it goes with most Christmas films, I have few little expectations, and this Netflix film delivers on giving us something light-hearted and forgettable while keeping things warm and cosy. The film is enjoyable if you keep your expectations low and simply get lost in the holiday chaos.

With a ton of ’90s stars to get us hooked on the nostalgia, I think the film has a somewhat novel premise that adds something new to the table, leaving us with a smile on our face. The film focuses on the ups and downs of families going through a divorce during the holidays and how that affects everyone. It’s not just about the adults, but it’s especially difficult for the kids. I think that part of the story isn’t always highlighted, but this rom-com does a good job of bringing that to the table.

Moreover, I liked how the film is more about finding yourself and finding a rhythm with your family instead of pushing the separated parents to find love with each other again. It’s annoying to watch these unrealistic rom-coms sometimes, but this film is surprisingly realistic, despite the Christmas cheer.

I also enjoyed watching the girlfriend not be completely, unrealistically evil and be somewhat sweet as well. More often than not, we vilify the new girlfriend/wife in these shows, and the gags always fall on them. However, Jamil is enjoyable in this film and a pleasure to watch. Silverstone and Hudson find a rhythm with their characters that comes from two people who have shared a life. Although nothing innovative or memorable, they are warm and realistic people.
Silverstone, of course, gets a light romantic angle as well, and it’s cute. The fun moments between her and Fodé are enjoyable and, despite being nothing groundbreaking, leave us quite entertained. It’s nothing as crazy as last year’s Hot Frosty (highly recommend, by the way), but it’s a warm, enjoyable time.
Final Thoughts

As far as Christmas movies go, this one has a good storyline that tries to get out of the cliched hole while still giving us some warm tropes. It’s engaging and fun and will be a swell time for the family.
