Criminal Justice Season 4 Ending Explained

The first episode starts with Anju running into her ex-husband Raj’s house and finding him with Roshni’s dead body. She is horrified and immediately calls the police, after which she meets Madhav to help her husband get out of jail. Of course, Raj is arrested, and the trial starts. It immediately doesn’t look good for Raj since he was dating Roshni while he was separated from Anju. Since their divorce wasn’t finalised, Raj and Anju were still technically married. Also, the fact that Anju was living next door to Raj doesn’t look good for anyone in the family.

The Nagpals’ only concern is their young daughter Ira, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome. As the police find more and more clues, they can’t help but point their fingers at Raj, since everything points to him. However, things take a turn when they finally find the murder weapon in Anju’s trash bag from that day. She is also consequently arrested, which leaves everyone shocked.

After much back and forth, it turns out that Raj was the actual killer. As we see towards the end of the season, Roshni was poisoning Ira for some time, which left her constantly unwell. Raj came back from his usual morning run a little early on the day of the murder and is shocked to find her poisoning his daughter’s milk. They get into an altercation, which results in him accidentally stabbing Roshni with a decorative scalpel.

Why Did Roshni Harm Ira?

The night before the murder, during Ira’s birthday party, Roshni had picked up a vibe between Raj and Anju and grew extremely jealous of their relationship. Feeling inadequate, she stormed out. However, this was not the only reason she decided to poison young Ira. As it turned out, Roshni was pregnant, and Raj’s mother struck up a deal with her to have an abortion in exchange for saving her mother. Heartbroken about losing her child, she wanted to take revenge, and the affair between Raj and Anju was just the icing on the cake.

In the last few minutes of Criminal Justice Season 4, Madhav learns about Anju’s stage four cancer diagnosis and realises that something is afoot. After bringing all the pieces together, he realises that Anju planted all the evidence that they found for the police to arrest her and convict her easily. As it turns out, Anju had known for a long time about her diagnosis and, fearing for Ira’s well-being, orchestrated it all to save Raj and secure her daughter’s future. Anju going to jail wouldn’t matter at this point because she’s dying anyway, but if Raj were convicted, there would be no one to look after Ira.

Listening to all this, Madhav is left heartbroken and decides to leave the family be instead of reporting it to the police.
