There is more music coming from the other side of the continent, and the Roar MV by THE BOYZ shows some wonderfully arranged vocals but also interesting video-making techniques switching between visual style and aspect ratios. This band has been in the industry since their debut in 2017. Members of the boy band include Juyeon, Sunwoo, Younghoon, New, Eric, Q, Hyunjae, Kevin, Ju Hak Nyeon, Sangyeon and Jacob.
This song is second on the tracklist of their mini album titled Be Awake. Other titles include Awake, Blah Blah, Savior, Horizon, and Diamond Life. The mini album was just released today, and this music video is essentially the first single. This is the band’s eighth mini album. Its music video is a delightful sight. All the dancers are in perfect synchronisation, especially in the instrumental solo in the middle of the song, where the dancers and the visuals worked perfectly to create a montage.
While the song is definitely dark and gritty, the video is surprisingly filmed during the day, in direct sunlight, moving away from the cliche dark and gloomy perspective it would normally take. Instead this video takes some inspiration from old dark films and uses high contrast to make its point.
It has a strong grunge rock vibe that doesn’t translate much in the music but is extremely appealing to look at. There are many instances when the camera shifts from one kind of film to another to capture multiple versions of the same movement, and they are compiled so well together it is effortless.

THE BOYZ should definitely give their video editors a raise because the shots flow and have enough movement to aid the music video beautifully. Roar as a song focuses on the basic drives that convinces us that we’re no different from animals. The lyrics and the costumes convey that exceedingly well. Once again, the designers have heavily leaned into the grunge and punk rock aesthetic to borrow visual elements that give the video such a strong energy.
Not to forget, the choreography is so well done, with sharp movements that run well in parallel with the other visual elements in the video. However, the hook step sets the song totally apart. It flows in movement but is powerful, a ringing endorsement for THE BOYZ choreographer and members who made it happen wonderfully. They have taken the song and elevated it well to the visual medium.
This writer must admit to not watching a lot of Korean pop, but music videos like these are reminders of why this genre works so perfectly well is because there is vision and deeper design values that go into making such extravagant videos. There may be many music videos, but the editing and shot selection have definitely put this on a different standard.
