Once Upon a Small Town episode 12 starts with the fated kiss by the roadside when it turns out that Yeong-suk and Yun-hyeong are also together – sadly, they were caught making out in his car by one of the nosy neighbours. It’s cute to watch Yun-hyeong go all gaga over Yeong-suk.

Anyway, the two of them plan on watching an early show on Ja-young’s day off, but unfortunately, both get called to do some emergency work, and after they spend time devoting themselves to work, their plans together get cancelled. Ja-young is rather annoyed about it and takes quite a few shots of soju to calm down.

As Ji-yul waits for Ja-young afterwards, he gets spotted by the three nosy aunties, but shockingly enough, a drunk Ja-young goes straight to the town broadcast station and announces to the entire station she’s dating Ji-yul – unfortunately for them, it turns out that everyone already knew. Hilarity ensues as all three of them laugh at the two love birds for thinking that they are very secretive.

After the alcohol vanishes from her blood, Ja-young, excited that everyone knows everything, takes Ji-yul to her house and paints his nails with balsam leaves like when they were kids so that no one tries to hit on him. It’s a rather cute scene with the two of them talking about their past and present.

As Ji-yul goes back to Seoul, Ja-young’s heart starts to fill with insecurities as different people tell her different things as to what she should do with her relationship. Yeong-suk’s theory of sharing everything is proved sort of true when Ja-young calls Ji-yul all of a sudden and sees that he has fractured his arm. She’s, obviously, taken aback and angry and admonishes him for not sharing more of his life.

After Yun-hyeong tells him to stop being so considerate and do what his heart tells him to do, Ja-young shares her burden with Seong-hyeon, who tells her to go and see Ji-yul instead of constantly complaining. Unfortunately for both of them, it turns out that Ji-yul, too, is driving down to see her and poor Ji-yul has to drive back to Seoul to meet his girlfriend.

When Ji-yul finally does arrive, she tells him that she has realised that if she wants to see Ji-yul, she should just come and see him instead of waiting around and sulking. The two of them talk their issues out during the talk and eventually are back to talking to each other normally.

Once Upon a Small Town Episode 12 Ending

As some time passes, things seem to have worked out well for Ja-young and Ji-yul’s relationship. Surprisingly, it seems like Sang-hyeon and Ji-yul are also getting along great – they apparently game together at night! As Ja-young goes to the vet hospital to get her puppy some shots, she finds Ji-yul there waiting for her – he’s back to congratulate her for becoming a sergeant, and she, furthermore, realises that he’s become the director of the hospital.

Ji-yul is moving to live in Huidong and taking over the business because his grandfather can’t do it anymore. Plus, he mentions that he likes living in the village and eventually proposes to her so that they can officially go off the dating market. Accepting the proposal, Ja-young promises to be as clingy as possible from then on out, giving us hopeful vibes for their future together.

The Once Upon a Small Town finale is rather sweet but goes down as an expected, tried and tested and rushed ending. I am thankful for a happy ending but damn, does the pace give you whiplash. The series has proven to be an excellent light and casual watch, which is rather forgettable but sweet regardless.
