Hit: The First Case Review: Does Rajkummar Rao’s Thriller Live Up to the Hype?

Hit: The First Case Review: The film stars Rajkummar Rao, Sanya Malhotra, Dalip Tahil, Shilpa Shukla, Milind Gunaji and others. The film is a Hindi remake of the Telugu film of the same name by director Dr Sailesh Kolanu. Sailesh has helmed the Hindi movie, too, produced by T-Series and Dil Raju Productions. Mithoon and Manan Bhardwaj composed the music. The runtime is of 136 minutes.

HIT: The First Case (Hindi) Review: Plot Summary

Vikram (Rajkummar Rao) is an officer at the Homicide Intervention Team in Rajasthan, with an extremely traumatic past. The past trauma takes a toll on his health and affects his work. Despite his doctor and girlfriend Neha’s (Sanya Malhotra) plead, Vikram doesn’t want to quit the job. He decides to take a 3-month holiday instead.

When Vikram goes away, a girl named Preeti goes missing, and the case goes to HIT. Neha, who finds a clue in her case, also goes missing. Vikram has to end his holiday abruptly and return to work on the case. Every person, including him, is a suspect with a motive. We sit till the end and keep guessing who might be the culprit.

HIT: The First Case Review: Discussion and Performances

A build-up of events is crucial in a thriller, especially in a Whodunnit story. Director Sailesh Kolanu succeeds in creating that buildup in the first half with his solid and intriguing screenplay. The main crime event takes some time to happen. But when it does, you are eager to know what happened, how it happened, why it happened and mainly who did it.

Hit: The First Case Review Still 1

The narrative becomes more complex in the second half, and I mean that positively. We are left to speculate as to what must have actually happened. When Vikram looks into the case of the missing girl, we discover some unexpected information about her background, secrets are revealed, and the list of suspects keeps getting bigger.

Kolanu is successful in engrossing us entirely in the suspense plot till it becomes monotonous. The second half suffered due to the building tension, which became tiresome after some time. They built the tension in an effort to entrap us in the story. But crime stories fans like me will end up guessing the perpetrator even before Vikram finds out

Hence, even when the twist after the twist happens, I wasn’t surprised. But I was interested in the person’s motive. Thankfully, the revelation element makes up for the overstretched investigative part. I was thrilled by the series of unfortunate events that led to the crime.

But the title suggests that it is the First Case. So even when the story is over, it isn’t truly over.

Rajkummar Rao as officer Vikram, has gone through so much trauma in the movie. We don’t really learn about his past. But the flashbacks he keeps getting seem painful. The investigation of the missing girl and Neha only adds more to the deaths he witnessed in person. Well, there’s another huge pile of trauma added to the list of his TRAUMAS.

Hit The first Case Still 2

There are many emotions Vikram goes through – anger, fear, pain, loss and, well, traumatic events. Rajkummar Rao is terrific in HIT – The First Case. It’s easy for an actor like him to pull off such challenging roles because he is extremely talented.

Sanya Malhotra doesn’t have much to offer as Neha. She goes missing half the time. Her character reminded me of Kiara Advani in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. We meet her at the beginning and the end. Sanya is a fantastic actor who deserves better roles and more screen space.

Final Thoughts

Overall, HIT The First Case is a whodunnit story that will leave you guessing till the end. The build-up is impressive, the investigative part is mind-bending, and the performances are good. If the second half was cut short just a little, it wouldn’t have given away the culprit for me. But did I enjoy sitting in the theatre impatiently to find out what happened? YES!
